I need a new piston for my ms310. the dealer wants 102.44 plus tax. Baileys doesnt handle aftermarket for the ms310. And Cbailey doesnt have one listed either. I suppose some people would say the smart thing to do would be to get an aftermarket cylinder/piston set for a ms390 and use that. I dont always do the smart thing. If I do upgrade to a 390 do I need to get other new parts, like a new muffler. One last question - Stihl wants you to use a special tool for installing the clips on the piston pin, do i need one of those tools to do a proper job?

No, just the profit margin on stihl pistons, your 310 $100, 361 $103, 084 $110, do you see the common theme.

A good pair of needle nosed pliers and a steady hand will install those wrist pin clips just fine. All of your stock external parts will work with the 390 cylinder and piston and you'll step up in power to boot. Of course you'll want to rebuild your carb and run your ignition lines to make sure your saw will be tip top after installing the new cylinder and piston.

I believe thats right. I'm at work now and don't have any literature here and I can't remember for sure off hand the piston sizes of the 029/029 super/310/039/ms390.

I agree I would probably just buy the used set and put a new set of rings on it. I believe curt also sells rings.

so then if

So a 290 = 46mm a 310 = 47mm and a 390 = 49mm is that correct?
Also there is a 390 piston available in Brazil only (whats up with that?)
If I can get a real (aftermarket)390 cyl/piston set for the same price as a new stihl piston I would probably do that , unless I have to modify or buy another muffler or other parts

The Stihl psiton clips do not have any "ears' (and you don't want them..). Just place one half of the clip in the hole, put your thumb over it and move the other half into the right position with a small screw driver that has a notch ground into it... and it will click down. make sure the gap is to the TOP. PITA until you've done a few. Wish I had the special tool also, but $$$..., and there are 4 of them..
