After having looked at the 440 (new designation for the 044), seeing one with a compression release, I thought it over and decided to buy one. They told me that the earlier version of the 044 had no compression release, but the new one did.

I went back to buy the saw, and the one they had was sold. I ordered one, picked it up today and took it home. I looked at it in my shop and noticed it had no compression release.

Am I confused about something here? Did I get an earlier production unit, or did I not see a legitimate 044 with the release? The serial number of this new saw is 155198996.

sign me frustrated....

The ms 440 and the 044 do not have comp releases. IMO they do not need them either. One more thing to go wrong and the 440/044 isnt hard to start anyways.

Compression release requirements is predicated on whom the user is.

The 044 I had required me to focus on the pull or it would bite back on a regular basis. I never drop started the saw. Always on the ground.

The 046 with the compression release is very nice. On many occasions I neglect to engage the release and still find it quite subtle and it never bites me back in the hand.

This opinion comes from someone who uses the saw fairly regularly but not everyday.

Just out of curiosity, what is the bhp on the ms440?Is it 5.36 or 5.1?

Stihltech,

Since you are in a dealership, tell me, did they mislead me, is the very newest 440 equipped with compression release, or not?

I talked to the dealer by phone just a bit ago. The new 440's do have compression releases, but apparently there are some of the 440's with no release that are still in the distribution network. They have to order another one and hope it is correct.

Have any of you ever had any trouble with a compression release?

I did go out and start the saw, and I guess it is not too hard to start, but I think I will get the compression release version.

It is frustrating.... I wanted to go out and cut, but I can't run it since I will be exchanging it.

Bigsnowdog,

I can only say I hope your other saw is what the Stihl dealer "HOPES" it will be:dizzy:

Happy Holidays,
Rick

bwalker,

You may be right. I have lived long enough to know anything is possible. We will see. It bothers me that it becomes more and more difficult to trust people.

If it is not available as stated by them, I think I may keep it, because it is not too hard to start. I just don't like being misled.

thanks for your thoughts.... and Merry Christmas to everyone.

If it does not have an Elastostart handle, get one. You won't miss the compression release at all.

Untill that elastostart handle snaps off right below the upper attachment, and you punch yourself in the eye!! (my brother did that ..lmao!!!!):D

why would you need or want a compression release on a ms440?? i would rather not have one on my ms460:alien:
