044 oiler

George,

1- It's on full
2- What's up?; My saw is not getting enough oil to the bar, it sounds rough compared to my 064, and overheats the bar. All of my other Stihl saws are roughly synchronized to empty at the same time, 025,029FB,064.
3- About 1/4 tank left. Oil passages clean.
4- Wide open throttle cutting 24" red oaks, 20" bar, agressive chain.
5- 35 degrees F
6- straight Stihl bar oil
7- About 10 years old

Are you always that snippy, or do rookies like me irritate you that much?

Sorry to seem snippy

I have 3 044's and all of them set on full oiling use about 1/2 to 2/3 of a tank of oil per tank of fuel. I just never gave it a second thought that my oilers are bad.

To use 3/4 of a tank of oil in a tank of fuel the oiler must be working. Check with glens he had some problems where the oil was falling off the tail of the bar and not oiling the bar. he is a good guy and not snippy lol.

In cold weather you can try thinning your oil with diesel. Try a pint or quart to a gallon of bar oil. I use trans fluid in the winter.

"sounds rough compared to my 064, and overheats the bar"

Rough inside wood cutting or rough when the chain is moves around the bar out of a cut? Are your chains razur sharp? Poor sharpening can cause the chain to cut rough. Is your chain the correct guage for the bar? This can cause the bar to overheat.

Sorry for seeming snippy.

The only 2 things I can think of that nobody has mentioned is the oil tank vent (under the bar plate) being plugged causing a vacuum. Also the drive clip that turns the oiler drive gear. Either it doesn't have enough tension or the groove where it fits into the drive gear is worn (causing the same lack of tension).

That shows the saw is sending plenty of oil to the jobsite unless it's leaking out somewhere.  Assuming it's not leaking, if your bar is getting too hot then your chain isn't in good shape.  If it's in fact sharp and you're not forcing the cut too much, then you need to check the drive tangs for being bent and/or dinged.  Have you ever thrown the chain and not dress the drivers before using it again?

Is this a Stihl bar, or other?

Glen
