I have a customer that was always telling me how nuch money he spent in my store. Finally I asked him what the point of always bringing up past business had to do with his current equipment need. I asked him if he got good value for the dollar he spent. He answered "Well , yeah". I went on to point out that $309. string trimmer he was looking at was going to make him 100 times more money than it would make for me. Come to my store and you get value for your dollar, I know what I'm talking about and can recommend the right product for your needs and know how to fix it should the need arise. That's called SERVICE and it's not free, or to be discounted, it has value. If you come to my house to remove a tree, you assume a lot of liability and personal risk to your body, you would be insulted if I tried to belittle the dollar value of your services, why should it be ok to do it to mine?

Note. I am not a sponsor of this site and will not do business on the internet or the telephone, don't ask the name of the dealership, I'm not allowed by forum rules (which I respect) to tell.

I agree that would be rude behaviour and bad manners.

Not really, If you were helping me out with my business I would would help you out with your tree problem and would not consider it belittling if you wanted a slight discount, if anything I myself would do a little extra in return for N/C. weather you asked or not, simply as a way of saying thank-you for all the good service and price I have recieved in the past, if it was provided of course.

But I may only ever have one tree to be removed and who knows how many customers a year all buying 3-5 saws each. If I "help them out with their business" by discounting everything thing they buy when they "help me out" by buying it , which one gets the honor of helping me out with my tree. If you buy a saw from me, we both get value out of the exchange, why should I have to take money out of my pocket for you to leave with a new saw? People with trees to cut are your target customer, people who need saws are mine, where is the sense in discounting to you target customer, where do you make up the difference?

Hi Chris-
I guess technically you could say I own my own tree business. I got the licenses and insurance, but I'm still subbing for the most part. I prefer just doing the actual climbing/ cutting and letting someone else deal with customers, employees, chippers, dump fees, etc. etc. And yes, that was my bucket truck you saw. Dozer Dan posted it on his site and MM reposted it here at AS somewhere.

As far as my writing style being altered, I don't see it. Maybe I'm just finally growing up a little. Just in the last year I discovered that the world doesn't revolve around me.

Brian - nice to hear from you! And it sounds like things are working well for you! :)
