Hi, I'm new to this site but have been striking out on searching for information about my chainsaw. I inherited a stihl 028 saw from my dad, it ran great for awhile but now it won't run. I took it in and had it looked at and was told that the electrical was bad. He quoted me almost $200 on fixing it. I have had it apart too many times to count. I thought it was bad gas, bad lines, no fuel etc. I am now to the point where I want to try and replace the coil myself. I am having two problems.

#1, how do I get the flywheel off.

#2. Where do I find an ignition coil? Are there any other coils that will fit like the 038 coil?

Their are two wires under the flywheel and I dont' know where they go or what they do. But that is why I need the flywheel off and also what is my big hold up. The saw is in great shape and it worked well last year. Any help would be appreciated.

The two wires that go under the flywheel go to the points/condenser.
You have three choices.

-pull the flywheel and fix the points system (most likely you have a bad condenser).
- snip off the two wires where they go under the flywheel, and put in a electronic trigger module from Stihl or aftermarket.
- replace the coil with a Stihl 0000 400 1300 coil. This is the most common coil used in Stihl saws. 026, 029, 034 036 etc... You can get them for $20-35 on ebay or in and ebay store.

The flywheel removal requires a stihl tool (puller). You can either buy it (ebay) or take the dissembled saw to you Stihl dealer and they will likely charge you a nominal amount to pop of the flywheel - just take seconds. Don't bash, prod, pry or use other than the correct tool.

Electronic Trigger module

Thanks for the info, what is going to be the easiest way to go. Will installing the electronic trigger module be easier than pulling the fly wheel and putting in points? If I snip the two wires, am I basically bypassing the points and condensor?

did some more looking

Hi, I did some more looking and found an old thread about adding an electronic ignition module to the saw. That definitely looks like the ticket. I'm assuming that it isn't to tough to put on. Do any of you guys have recommendations on what kind. It looks like I'll go with the Atom Ignition, but the post said to go with the blue ignition module and the website says to go with the brown. Any ideas?

Yes. The two wires are just one to the grounding switch and the other to the coil. When you cut them, just join them togther and put them onto the trigger module. Mount the module to the lower coil screw, with a washer.

Coil Question

Lakeside,

Will this coil work in an 028WB with points?

Thanks and maybe this will get the project off of the bench!

I owe you guys,

Thanks alot for the info, a store had one, I put it in last night and it runs like a champ. The wiring was super simple and it starts better now than it did before. If you were in my area, I'd buy you guys a beer. The ignition module sold for $19.50, thats a far cry from the $180 to fix it or the $400 for a new saw. The 028 I inherited is in great shape, should last me quite a while. Thanks again.

Yes it does... The wire that goes to the kill switch just attaches to the tab on the coil. The points are just abandoned under the flywheel.
