I am replacing a piston on an MS260 and trying to determine if it's a 44.7mm or 44mm. There was a sticker on it with 261776536 which I believe to be the serial number but would feel better verifying it stamped somewhere on the saw. Where can I look on the saw to see the serial number other than this sticker?

According to Lakeside the 44.7mm's came in higher serial numbers (262xxxxxx) so I think it's a 44 but before I buy a new piston and rings I want to be sure. Thanks guys!

The serial number is on the small flat area to the right of the muffler just behind and above the case mounted dog.

Pull the cylinder. You need it off to fix the saw anyhow, and only then can you determine if you need a P&C , or just a piston.

The other way is that the 44.7 piston is domed slightly; the 44mm is flat. The 44.7 was fitted with a heat sheild beteeen the muffer and cylinder, so if you have one of these, it's probably not a 44.

Thanks Andy. I already had it apart. I think the cylinder might be salvageable but it appears that despite the serial number, it's a 44.7. The piston is domed, there is a piece betweend the cylinder and muffler and (while my caliper is a cheapie and only graduated at the mm mark) the bore measured greater than 44mm...almost 45 so I guess it's a 44.7mm.

At the price I was quoted at my stihl dealer, I can buy the Tecomec cylinder/piston kit you recommended so no reason to even try to save the cylinder. Thanks again for your help. I'll probably be starting a thread again when the parts come in to make sure I don't screw anything up. :)
