are the stihl splitting mauls any good, i work at a stihl dealer so i can get them at cost. i currently have a couple of el cheapo hardware store mauls ( 8 and 10 pounders) and they have a crappy head design and the mauls overall are just starting to wear down. thanks

Yes, they are excellent quality. They are made my Oschenkopf (meaning Ox Head) and are normally cheaper than the equal Oschenkopf tool.

I don't think the big ox is the same as the PA 80. Big ox gots extra stuff and colors.

It is not the same as the "Big Ox". Oschenkopf makes other splitting mauls and axes also. The PA 80 is probably the same as the Ox 35

Stihl does have a maul in line with the Big Ox:

I have not seen that version of the stihl, I like it better. I think the PA 80 is the OX 638 H.

I've noticed the local Fleet store carries Stihl mauls. I am going to check them out tomorrow to see if they have the collared model to fondle.

That is the only one I could consider given the way how I do things.

The collar is such a simple way to dramatically extend the lifespan of a splitting maul. I'd also never consider buying a wood handled maul without one. If my Gransfors Bruks maul didn't have one, I'd never let anyone else touch the thing, which of course would be bad for their business; I know of 2 people who have bought one after trying mine.

Nice!!!!

This is why I need some sort of steel collar.

The handle is resting on a piece that now smashed from the handle.

I will definitely check them out tomorrow....and if it talks to me, who knows.

I checked it out and we chatted.

At that price I would like to try it out first to see how much shock transmission there is to the arms.

Was definitely heavier than I was expecting. The weight difference in hand compared to the Fiskars was pretty noticeable to me even though on paper it's a 1/3 of a pound or so.

We shall see.

I'm waiting on my local saw shop to finish fixing my Scag and then I'm going to pick up one of the Stihl splitting axes. I believe he has them. Hopefully it'll be done tomorrow, lawns going on almost 3 weeks.

Its either that or the Helko variant. I like the X27 but I'm sorta a traditionalist. I like wood handles.
