Im wondering if anyone knows about the stihl tack det 303.
wondering how it is connected to the saw.
If it works good
About how much they cost new.
is it a good choice or would you buy something else

thanks

Mike I have a Stihl EDT6 I picked up a few weeks back and love it, I am assuming that the EDT 303 is the larger model which you hold in your hand and clip on to the plug or electronic system. According to my dealer the 303 does the same things as EDT6 + it can take some readings to analyse electronic modules and electronic system problems etc. He has one but hardly ever use it so he claims, he tells me they mostly use the tiny EDT units and I did see 2 of them, one attached to each bench in the shop.

He refused to sell me the larger unit claiming I would not find as handy, practical and as usable.

I love the tiny EDT6 unit, you hold it within 2 - 3 inches of the plug without the need of a wire and it will read the rpm's, once you pull it away it displays the highest rpm's read during that session. A must have to adjust chainsaws properly or any 2 or 4 cycle engine for that matter.

Perhaps StihlTech here can comment further on these.

Are all the stihl tacks wireless, the 303 looks to have a black wire with an allegator clip on it. whats that for? thanks

Mike I do not know if that model is wireless. SORRY !

I have the same one I bought from my local dealer. Like Sedanman said, the battery is not replaceable but they told me it was supposed to last for 100 hours of run time or something crazy like that. They used the same one in the shop for several years and checked rpms on every new saw they sold. It seems to me it retailed for close to $100.00 but they said they sold it to me at cost-seems like it was around fifty some dollars. Does that sound right to someone who would know?

BTW, it works great. Just get it within a couple of inches of the plug (you dont have to take the top cover off) and it reads the rpms. I think the lead with the clip might be for applications where you cant get the tack close enough to read the spark.

i have a det 303. it can be used with or without the wire. great tool to have when changing elevation greatly during the day. i set my saws about 500 rpm below listed max. but sometimes i go cut near town (about 1000' lower). i check the rpm when i get there. or sometimes it sounds a little bit fast so i put the tach on it. good way to check your "ear". paid around $75

There may not be a trap door and connectors, but that don't mean the battery cannot be replaced...

Santa brought me a DET-303. You really dont have to hold it all that close to the plug or wire. The wire and clip can be used for remote mounting etc. Battery life is stated as 20,000 hours running time!
