I don't think re-painting the crankcase is necessary in most saw rebuilds, and if it's a saw I'm buying, I'd rather not have the crankcase painted. That way you can see a lot of the original wear and tear and make a sound decision on what kind of service life the saw is going to offer.
A very, very experienced timber faller and pro saw technician (over 50 years at both jobs) once told me "A coat of paint can hide a multitude of sins."
I'd agree, to a point...
after all, if he's going that FAR to restore it (new tank, recoil, top covers, side covers, etc, and install a new top end, seals, and or bearings, and NOT paint the case?? :dunno:
you KNOW that with THAT much wear to the case, those plastics would NEVER look that good...
all i'm really saying there, is the REST of the saw is hiding a HARD service life...
It's a little "aftermarkety" for my taste, but good for him, I say!!!:msp_thumbsup:
If I paint the recoil and clutch cover on a saw, I seldom paint the cases......Each to their own I guess.
+1... all depends on how much it's torn down... if it comes down to splitting the cases, and they are good, why not freshen it up, but if it's just to give it a quick face-lift (paint prevents corrosion...) the covers work well...
MY POINT of the post initially, is I've seen ALL ORIGINAL good condition 038M, and MII's go for LESS, and this unit is , well, PIECED together.... :dunno:
PLUS he asks BIG $$ for his saws....
