I don't think re-painting the crankcase is necessary in most saw rebuilds, and if it's a saw I'm buying, I'd rather not have the crankcase painted. That way you can see a lot of the original wear and tear and make a sound decision on what kind of service life the saw is going to offer.

A very, very experienced timber faller and pro saw technician (over 50 years at both jobs) once told me "A coat of paint can hide a multitude of sins."

I'd agree, to a point...

after all, if he's going that FAR to restore it (new tank, recoil, top covers, side covers, etc, and install a new top end, seals, and or bearings, and NOT paint the case?? :dunno:

you KNOW that with THAT much wear to the case, those plastics would NEVER look that good...

all i'm really saying there, is the REST of the saw is hiding a HARD service life...

It's a little "aftermarkety" for my taste, but good for him, I say!!!:msp_thumbsup:

If I paint the recoil and clutch cover on a saw, I seldom paint the cases......Each to their own I guess.

+1... all depends on how much it's torn down... if it comes down to splitting the cases, and they are good, why not freshen it up, but if it's just to give it a quick face-lift (paint prevents corrosion...) the covers work well...

MY POINT of the post initially, is I've seen ALL ORIGINAL good condition 038M, and MII's go for LESS, and this unit is , well, PIECED together.... :dunno:

PLUS he asks BIG $$ for his saws....

$500 for a old 038, are people insane? Maybe it is time for me to drag a few saws out and throw a big ole price tag on them and see what I get.

That's what I'm saying!! I'd be tempted to sell my 038 Mag II in NICE shape for $500... hell, atleast it's ORIGINAL!!! :dizzy:

If its the same fella I'm thinking of his prices have always been pretty high. Didn't know he was doing the e bay thing.

If it is the same fella he used to try to sell on Craigslist here in the bay area. Kinda funny I have never seen his e bay store before.

Geesh makes me sorry for giving all my old saws away, last 4 I gave away,2 290's,a 390 And a 254xp all working. I just figured I wasn't going to use them anymore so just taking up space, dumb dumb dummy !!

This guy had piles of saws for sale on ebay. All are priccey too. Check out the 044's and 046's he has. Pretty much every model you look up, you'll see a few from him. I wonder with that many saws turned out, if the quality is there or are they just rushed out?

I have looked at a lot of this sellers saws, and he had some I liked, but with the Chinese parts, that just kind of held me back.

Yea, me too. Makes you think he probably cheaped out on the whole build. Not even using OEM plastics. And charging the kind of prices they should come with all OEM parts IMO.
I'd say he's cranking em out as fast as he can, just to try to make a buck. I think I'll pass.:msp_thumbup:
