Dog made me aware of a skunk in my pile of unsplit wood. :fart: Two baths later I could let her back in the house! I'm trying to flatten out the pile to maybe chase it out. Taurus in hand of course!

Any good preventative measures I should have taken? Thanks guys! Back to the stink!

I'm surprised any skunk showed up at all if your dog is allowed access to the woodpile. The best deterrent you have for skunks is a dog that won't tolerate them or rats, mice, opossum, ground hogs, etc. in the yard. Usually the animals have enough sense to stay away after they pick up the dog's scent.

While we're at it, ever hear the story about the mamma skunk and her two little ones, named In and Out?

Well Out was always in when In was always out, so she never could keep track of them. One day, Out came home but In was out, so mamma skunk told Out, "Go find In, it's time for supper."

In came back with Out and mamma skunk asked Out, "How on Earth did you find your brother this time?

To which Out replied, "In stinked." :givebeer:

I heard that story so many times at boyscout camp. That really brings back memories!

if you do shoot it, GET RID OF IT! take it a long long long ways from your house and burry it or make sure its gone, if you dont it will stink for months. my father made that mistake when he was a kid, he killed a skunk and just took it out back and tossed it in the woods, well 2 days later the stink was soo bad that it made people sick.
its best to throw mothballs in the pile also, i have heard it drives away skunks, coons, and insects. all of which you dont want. ive heard lots of techniques but im unsure of some, or where people think these things up.

Gadzooks, Kyle! That's when I first heard this story. Amazing what we learn as boy scouts that we never forget. I also learned how to gather wood and build a fire to keep my body warm to survive. A merit badge was offered for that. I also learned in boy scouts how to tie knots, including a tautline hitch.

Today I tied two of those knots to secure the logs that I piled up almost cab high with firewood in my truck. These two knots made sure that the load made it to its destination without a fall out. :chainsaw:

Note to OP: Tomato catsup (ketchup) is about all there is to combat the skunk chemical, mercaptan. Bathe your dog in it. BTDT.

My dog got sprayed twice this spring and we had real good results from peroxide, baking soda, mixed with dawn dish soap. If she gets wet or damp she gets a little odiferous for a month or so. The tomato juice just turned her pink, she still smelled real bad!!

That is the same mixture that a dog groomer friend told me to use when our dog got sprayed.

That's a big fear of mine my dog getting sprayed by a skunk! Now how to get rid of it? I have shot about six skunks in my life I would say I am sitting 50/50 on them smelling the place up lol 22-250 to the head = no smell same with a 12 gauge. body shot = smell.
Skunks are mainly nocturnal. Friend of mine had one under his shed I told him to try a light aimed under the shed. He did one better put out a bright work light and left a radio close by,skunk left. But I have a feeling it might have more to do with the country music! lol
I have been told if you trap them in a closed or covered cage type trap they will not spray? I am not sure about that one. Mind you my brother in law had one as a pet in Saskatchewan as a kid and it was fully armored! but never sprayed anyone and it was living in the house!

We used to have a dog that would hunt and kill skunks. The peroxide, baking soda, Dawn dish soap mix is the only thing that worked. Moth balls will run it away. I had one get in an old house we used to live in and that's how I got it to go back out. If yo do shoot it, cover the area with powdered lime and pour lime on it before you bury it, helps with the smell A LOT.

You might have problems burning that wood...well, not you but the neighbors. I got the schoolground in a tax sale as it adjoined my property.

I tore down an old schoolhouse and burned the scrap. In the 10 years I had been there, I had never smelled a skunk but I sure did when I burned the stuff. Wasn't really pungent but there was no doubt about what it was.

Skunks are good; they eat mice. A small plane just crashed in Rhode Island. Apparantly, a mouse got in the engine and built a nest in the carburetor, and the nest got sucked into the motor causing it to malfunction. The pilot could of used your skunk.

You could always set fire to the woodpile, that would scare him out!:) :)

Ground celery seed works on the dog. Wife probably has some in the spice rack. Just rub em down good, no more smell. Obviously easier/more effective on short haired dogs.

Good idea avalancher!

I used a mix of 1 quart hydrogen peroxide (3%), 1 tbsp of dawn dish soap, and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Wash, rinse, then wash, rinse with regular dog shampoo. Got rid of 95% of the smell.

Been trying to find the critter, haven't seen him yet! Maybe that's good a thing!

Similar to what LOML and I used: One bottle of Catsup, clean out with water to use all. One pint bottle of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup lemon-scented dishwashing detergent, 1/4 cup baking soda, one pint water. Mix all ingedients in a 1-gallon pail. Apply all over dog. Rub in.

Rinse with one large bucket of luke warm water. Rub dog down with old towel. Consider throwing towel away. After dog dries, brush thoroughly.

Allow one week or more for skunk odor to completely disappear.

If you get em into a animal trap were they cant raise there tail they cant spray, after that toss the trap into a pond to see how long he can hold there breath.. Heck if you can sneeky up on em and grab by the tail and hang em upside down he wont spray ya.. Last time i shot skunk it was in our shop. Nailed the bugger the head. I didnt get outa the shop fast enough, went through about 2 gals of tomatoe sauce in the shower scrubbin down and had to get rid of some clothes. People at the office loved seeing me for a few days. Week later the dog drags em outa the burn pile to try to get a meal. Seems like i get 3-4 each yr and each time its a fun filled event
