My stock 7900 Dolmar with less than 2 tanks of fuel though it was .4 sec faster though the same wood with identical bar/chain set up than a brand new 385XP ! This was backed up with another operator at Dans getogether. The 372, 7300, 7900, 385XP shoot out is shot! There is no need to do any futher comparason, The 7900 kicks a$$!

I appreciate your enthusiasm Paul, but your post begs for further scrutiny. I don`t mean to knock the 7900 either and I`ll probably have one soon.

How many tanks of gas have been through the 385?

How big was the wood?

Were both saws carbs adjusted by the same person? Could that person have any interest in making the 7900 faster than the 385?

Whether or not the stock 7900 is faster is almost irrelevant since the saw can undeniably hang with the 385 and it weighs 2# less. You do however see a difference when you get the long bars out, which is where >80cc saws should be operating anyway, but the 7900 is an exception due to it`s weight. The stock 385 will take the 7900 easily in my opinion, when you`re running a 32" or longer bar in big hardwood.

What you and I would probably agree on is that the stock 7900 is faster than a stock 460Mag.

All that being said, the 7900 is still probably the best total package of these three when stock and maybe even modified. I`m just curious to know how the guys with 7900s whose transfers are so fat that they are no longer closed are going to like them when they are putting new pistons and rings in them when they have a hundred hours on them.

Hi Russ, I saw your 046 cut today and it cut right alongside the 385 & 7900, and that's with Paul & I doing the timing.
Anywho, I am jealous and think I will get Ed to build a 7900 or 046 I will be buying off Jarod when I dump some more Veneeeeeeer.

Hi John,

Thanks for the feedback on my 460. Ed told me that it almost runs with the ported 7900 which is a very strong saw.

I`m looking forward to giving it a whirl myself. As you know, I`m not the biggest fan of the 460 but thought I`d see what could be made of it. I`m sure that Ed did an outstanding job. BTW, did Ed let you run it? I told him to feel free to let anyone he trusts have a go at it. I`d be curious to know what your hands on impressions are.

Jokers i am sure the 7900 will last as long as the 385 and as far as the 385 beating the 7900 in bigger hardwood , to be honest i think the 7900 will pull ahead farther because of the torque it has
Sedanman the out come will be the same when you port the 7900 , the 385 comes up short again
Jokers your 460 and the 066 and 385 were with in a couple hundreds of each other, all ported and the 7900 was just out thereplaying by its self

Ed,

Of course with your experience I give your statements more credibility. Sorry to everyone else, it`s nothing personal as in an intended slight.

I still have two questions though. I know that the 7900 is a powerhouse right out of the box, but I`ve been told that the tranfer ports are small and that to get all the potential out of this saw you have to hog them out to where they become huge open transfers. Normally in a scenario like this, say a kart or bike motor, with the rings and piston unsupported over a large area, you see extremely rapid wear of those components. So my question is, why is the ported 7900 any different? I want there to be a good reason because I want a modified 7900, but I don`t want it to be high maintenance.

My second question pertains to the torque of the 7900 vs let`s say the 385. I`ve run two 7900s and own a 385. I don`t see either saw as being tremendously tourqey for their displacement. Are you telling me that the 7900 has a ton of torque unleashed when you port it?

For the record, although I have a 385, and mine is even modified, it`s not my favorite saw. I am however a natural skeptic and my skepticism in this matter is supported by my own, first hand experience running new stock 7900s and 385s. I was extremely impressed by the 7900 but didn`t see it beating the 385, it was more neck and neck. Like I`ve said before though, they both were faster than the 460 from what I saw. Don`t ask me in public why I have a 460, LOL.

well if russes 046 385 and 066 ,,all ported,,ran the same times...,it seems to me that it would have taken bigger wood to separate them as to performance..surely an 066 would be stronger in big. im asking this of ed as he knows what hes talkin ,,when hes talkin saws. not that hes the only one. i mean the displacement is quiet different.. so thats the only thing that i can see thats a variable.. assuming chains are sharp an all. not wanting to squabble ,,id just like to here an reason my logic dont hold water.

We ran that new 7900 that sedanman had along with the new 385 he had. Boths saws are bone stock, both saw had the same chain, the same make bar,in the same log. We had diferent operators run the same saws and the outcome was always the same. The 7900 ruled every time.
stihlman 036 will post the times later.
He was the official timer and his wife was the official record keeper.

saw weights

what is the weight of the 7900 versus say an 044, or 046? i "need" to get another saw, and want something of the performance level of an 044 or better, but being under 180# dressed and saw in hand, weight is a factor for me. i also have to cut in steep terrain at high altitude. sometimes walking in over a mile to where i am cutting. always been a stihl fan, but willing to try something new if necessary.

The 7900 weighs a tad more than an 044 or 372, not noticable, and a lot less than an 046. Having run all but the 046 , the 7900 is the best. Some of mine are fully woods modded, some partial. Along with my Greffardized 346, the PP 7900 is the best saw I've ever run.

Jokers donot believe everything you here on transfer ports sizes, different motors need different port area and the 7900 falls into the different motor type,

fuel

ehp. i was in quebec on the weekend pickup a litttle fuel when i was there ,, did u ever use any of levesques fuel 120 nitro. 166dolmar

166 when you have a question like this PM me so you donot not get the guys p!ssed at you for screwing up there thread ok

Ed,

I take this statement as you saying that the 7900 doesn`t need huge transfers. Is that correct? That`s definitely good news in regard to any durabilty concerns.
