Had to take down this storm damaged walnut today and decided to take some of it home in slabs.

After taking the crown off this is what we had to deal with.

Got it down. That's caddguy resting on his prize.

Rate his stump! Just kidding, look at that rot, the whole truck was that way.

Finally to milling the broken over branch.

All of that sawdust down on the ground right next to the saw I decided to check the filter and plug and take a break.

Filter is perfectly clean. This high top setup on the 288XP is perfect for this.

Today's haul.
Not the greatest slabs but they'll make a few good glue ups.

How far up through that trunk did the center rot go? Hope not to far....

Some good looking slabs you have there...got 'plans for them yet'?

REP sent for the pics!

Nice! Gotta love Walnut. Too bad about the rot; that would have been a good saw log. Husqvarna's centrifugal air filtering is great! My now dead 394XP always had a clean filter even in conditions like yours. My little Stihl 361 doesn't do as good a job at keeping the dust from reaching the filter.

I think the plan is to make end tables and such with it. I'm not much into wood working as I am to building saws. Caddguy will build something out of it.

It was pretty bad news when we got it down. The rot went all the way up the stem and you can see the start of rot in the first foot of the broken over part. Hopefully guddguy will be able to do some glue up posts or something out of the heart wood. There wasn't much heart wood when we started to slab it.

Oh well we have a large trunk off another walnut we took down a month ago to mill yet. But that we didnt have to mill onsite. There should be good heart wood in there to make solid tops with. Of course I'll post pictures when we get to milling it.

Now dead! We can fix that in a hurry. Check out my 394 build three on the chainsaw forum. I have two more experimentals and caddguy wants me to port his when I find the right numbers.

Oh and a 288 high top is not centrifugal. It takes in air at the back left of the saw. I was watching and I didn't see anything make it to that location to be sucked in. Plus the HD filter does an excellent job.

Right you are!! It's just got a scored piston/cylinder. Spark is kinda weak too, but that's another story. I looked and looked for a cylinder for it for less than $330, and when I came up short, I popped on a used 084. It turned out to have a scored p/c too!! The seller refunded part of the money, and I have a lead on a used p/c for it. Gonna fix the 084 first, but if you know where to find a 394 cylinder, let me know. I'm going to experiment with some muriatic acid to try and get as much aluminum off the cylinder wall as possible, but its pretty bad. It leaned out while cutting a 24" DRY black locust, and soared to probably 15-16k, and the kill switch failed. Not a good day. Seriously not a good day. I was helping a friend out that was in dire need of firewood. Hopefully it'll come back to me. It'll get fixed; good saw.

Those slabs will likely have pressure in them. When/if you try and edge join them they will bow badly after you have straightened one side. I have literally seen a slab just like that bow as soon as I made a straight cut down one side.
