A couple of additions:

Extend the bracing up as high as possible. I don't have any engineering to back this up but I would feel better going at least 1.5 times the length of the observed defect. Even if the bark weren't broken on the outside you can generally see some defect. The crack becomes the fulcrum and adding long braces changes the lever action.

Since you already had a concentrated load on a defect, I would have rather seen the tree worked from the top down. The more mass you leave lower in the tree the lower the bending load is on the fulcrum.
