I have taken two sears chain saws (parts say Poulan on them) and made one very good saw(46cc) The threads have striped on the motor where it bolts to the oil and gas reservoir. There are four bolts What is the best way to correct this problem.

Thanks

(ps Now do not tell me to make a boat anchor out of it. I really like the saw)

If it's a "real machine threads" and into Alumimum/mag alloy, then I use "time-serts". Much better for small threads than Helicoils. You can get them though Madsens.

If it's a "one off" repair, just tap out the holes to the next side threads and use larger fasteners.

Time-serts are definitely better, especially for a high-torque application, but I've had good luck with heli-coils or equivalents on most things like you've desribed. I found a very inexpensive equivalent to heli-coils on eBay. Its been a while and I can't remember exactly, but they were called something like fix-a-thred (missing the "a"). for sizes like you're looking (probably 8, 10, 12, or maybe 1/4"), they were around $10.00 or less.

First Thanks to each of you Guys for the help how to fix the problem. The motor block is made of Aluminum/mg allory and the bolts are small with machine threads I order four new bolts from Poulan with parts number They were to large(20.00 plus freight) Had to pay up front credit card before company would take my order. Bolts will work on their newer saws.

I should have ask you guys first I would have been a head money wise if I had.

Thanks again

What's wrong with striped threads? Better than plaid, I suppose.

Seriously, is there a like part on the other saw (with good threads) that could be used, or would repairing these threads be far less hassle? Could one loc-tite studs in place and use nuts on exposed threads? I like the over-sizing of screw diameter suggestion, myself.

Good luck on the wrap-up - coincidentally I just completed a two-poulans into-on job myself. Anyone need XXV or 2000 Deluxe parts?

First off, my guess is that the threads are probably metric. If you don't want to buy the helicoil set for a one-time job you could take the saw to a machine shop & see if they'll do the job for you.

I've drilled & tapped housings for oversize bolts, then installed short studs with loctite. I flush-cut the studs, then drilled & tapped them for the original size bolts. A PITA but it works.
