In this industry, I have heard the machine/job of removing stumps called both.

I have seen men with teeth missing operate their machines with dull teeth:monkey: with dust flying...

This is what I call 'stump grinding'.

I have seen professional men with face shield/machine shield operate their machines with sharp teeth:clap: with mulch flying...

The latter of the two will tear thru the stump in much less time, and also generate a reusable resource.

I call this stump cutting.

I refer to it this way when selling the work to my clients.

in the end the guy that is grinding may not be doing it safe. But he is probably just trying to feed his family. the only way he knows how.

Vermeer has tried so hard to call their machines stump cutters, but everybody I have ever known calls them stump grinders, including vermeer owners.

It's like when they wanted us to stop calling the place we got our used auto parts from "junk yards"

Stump jumper is the steel disc on the bottom of a field mower. It helps the mower get off the stump from the tree it just pulverized.

Regarding "cutters" vs "grinders": Tradition says it's a grinder. There is no Yellow Pages section for "Stump cutting".

And most of the manufacturers advertise their stuff as "stump grinders". I believe that this new language is driven by the marketing departments of companies that offer two different product lines: "grinders": tub and otherwise, and "cutters": a term saved for stump grinders.

I had this conversation with one of my guys just last week. It is a settled argument, from my point of view.

"Grinders":

Better be very carefull and not quote to your customers thatyou are a stump remover. You could be all day on a 75$ stump

As for the chip in the nose,,,,It's happen a few times to me ,,,it sucks.

plastic shield

I just want everyone to BE SAFE, I helped a guy put a plastic shield on his machine, it came off a motorcycle, but it really protected him.

Hanging below that I used a mudflap off a semi.

I've always heard it called stump grinder. Never heard it called stump cutter before. Even the Vermeer dealer here refers to them as stump grinders. But what do I know, I'm just an old hillbilly treeman in Oklahoma. I do have all my teeth though... Even if some are store bought... :D

Did I mention that I hate grinding stumps? I let my emloyee do that... The toothless one.
