So, the big old Maple in my front yard needs to come down.
I'm afraid that it will come down on the house in a storm. It survived Sandy but many in the neighborhood did not.
I have had to use root-X and the occasional roto-root for the waste line coming out of the house.
So, since the tree is coming down and the stump ground, I want to make sure that the root system will die off. Do I need to do anything further than grinding and back filling the hole?

Thank you for your help.

if needs must remove pre poison tree before you remove so drill fill etc around trunk base as allows trans location of herbicide thought out root mass saves having suckers popping up and continuing to grow after tree gone this to be done in your spring summer as not work so good in the fall

await suckers that may arise from left sub surface roots allow these to grow a bit then spray with herbicide. The amount of regrowth depends a lot upon the tree species and pre removal vigor,,, I think your Maples are average sucker for regrowth sprouts...

Just grind it below grade about 8 inches and bury the whole mess under some fresh loam (dirt). I've never seen new grouth from a maple after ginding the stump and have never seen suckers growing from the remaining root system. It it does, clip the new growth at the base. After a short time, the suckers will stop. But don't loose sleep worrying about suckers. They won't happen.:msp_thumbsup:

Where in NY are you located? If in the country, drill some holes in the stump with a 1/2" or larger wood bit, pour in kerosene, let soak a few days, pour in more kerosene, let soak a few days. Then light it. It will be gone in a matter of a day or two. Back fill with top soil and plant grass.

Make sure the guy grinding the stump chases the surface roots (exposed roots) with the grinder. All of the "sucker sprouts" I've seen come from the top of the exposed roots. where they can get sunlight. NOT from roots below ground.

Maples here seldom sprout up, usually sweetgums, and locusts are notorious for this........

if you hire a professional Arborist then it will be easy for you instead of doing things on your own and if you are hiring him tell him that you want the whole stump and root system removed. as far as my knowledge is concern by Stump Grinding you can only remove a few inches of the tree trunk under ground, but you are still left with most of the large root network in the soil only. if you operation succed with the task you are doing than its good but if not contact A good arborist like we are Tree Trimming Toronto as we
provied these services and creates a report of your whole operation and gives you a proper estimate of the task involved in it. if you not hire there a certain kind of chemicals available which helps you to drilling of holes in the stump and adding that chemicals.
this can also be a good option for you :)
