I have an older vermeer stump grind, Its a 630a. My question is this, all the teeth have to be set using a gauge at 3 different heights. I dont understand why, i would think that the one set lower than the one it follows won't do anything. If you were to buy a set of green teeth or yellow jackets they can't be adjusted. I just can't see the big picture I guess.

The ones that are staggered in towards the center of the wheel assist cutting when you sweep left to right. Depending on the unit there may be anywhere from 3/4" to 3" from the tooth furthest from the center shaft to the tooth closest to the center shaft. This controls how deep a cut you can make when moving side to side. They also assist in moving chips out of the hole.

That was a very poor design for mounting stump teeth. I had a 630B in the late eighties and upgraded to a Rayco 1665 after just a couple of years. The 630 is one very slow grinding stump grinder!

She cuts pretty good when sharp but I live in a very rocky area. The real beauty of this machine is that I paid $800 dollars for the machine and it didnt have over 150 hours (thats a guestimate) the thing looked brand new, ran like new

Not to be mean but odds are that it is a rebuild. Hopefully they did it right.

Thats not mean, the machine is like brand new, i got the deal of the century. The paint isnt even worn off the controls and i found it on craigs list 40 miles away and it turned out I knew the guy. I would almost bet it had the original belt on it. I got lucky that day wich dosn't happen to often the 630a had 18 cutters unlike the 630b

The idea with green teeth or jackets is that you don't have to gauge them, just like pro teeth, they are pre adjusted, and you can swap or flip the tooth is seconds. They are real handy when it's time to sharpen them as well. good luck.

Upgrade to the greenteeth. They aren't very expensive and make the 630B an entirely different machine. I still wouldn't call mine "fast" but it's way better than it was with those chinsy teeth from the factory.

Also consider the yellow jackets, the improvement is incredible over
the sq teeth, and changing is a snap,,,i went with the yellow jackets
because i have a dealer close, they are about 8 bucks each after the
initial investment, with two cutting edges a good deal i think...
