Yup, I did it! The good part is that smashing the fence was planned on-everything on the lot is scheduled for demolition after I remove the trees. Monday I may smash a house! However, not all went as planned. I intended to put one leader through the fence with the rest of the tree missing it. Instead I centered the fence. The big Elm failed to follow the notch! As I watched it going I thought "Why is it going that way?".It went about 15 degrees south of the desired line of fal. The face cut was well formed . The tree's weight was toward the desired direction of fall. Examination of the hinge proved interesting. About one half inch deeper than the face cut there was an encapsulated end of an old stubbed branch. The tree went over with about 4.5 inches of hingewood left. It rode the old stub ripping the fibers around the "socket" While being guided by the old branch which was aimed to where the tree actually fell.
Be careful out there-there are weird flukey things just waiting to happen.

large knots in the hinge area can send things awry, If a guy can see it when the face is put in, going a little deeper, or changeing a corner is a plan.

That is interesting - I have had some minor misdirection on a fall due to knots, but nothing as drastic as you mention Stumper...

Something else I have to worry about now!

humm i did something like that a few months ago ,had a newbie start i said stand back and watch this is how an expert fell's a tree ,the tree went 4 ft to the left crash bang 30 ft of fencing turned into splinters..i felt very very small lol..the tree had an unusual lean ,large kink half way up the trunk ,[well that's my excuse]

Thanks for the info Justin. I have seen this happen with undetected rot but not knots or branches. The only reason our rotted 3 ft. DBH Oak tree did not hit the early 1900's house was 2 ropes and 2 men pulling on the tree.Scared the heck out of us as the house was built with custom block that were individually made on-site

Cool deal Justin, can I come down and Blow the house up?????? Im not working Monday, the chipper truck is in the shop and its supposed to snow Sunday? What do ya say? It will be fun.

Well, Actually I intend to miss the house to keep the clean-up simple. I am authorised to clobber it if necessary. There is a tree on the property line that we are trying to get permission to remove. Failing that it will be a big gnarly Elm to prune. :) I'd love to have you come do it but the customer hasn't been able to contact the co-owner yet. If you want to come over Monday I could let you feed the chipper if nothing else.

Your gonna pay me $225 to feed the chipper? Sounds like a deal to me. However blowing up a house sounds like more fun, I can mix up some amonium nitrate. I will even bring the beer.

How about $25 to feed the chipper? :p I'll let you run the Alpina!

I bet I can find something for you to climb.

Seriously, I probably don't have a $225 dollar day for you . Would it be worth your while to come over for $150? If I get you up a tree then I'll pay more.

Come on down. You'll have to take at least 150 though. If I have something to climb you can use my stuff-if the saddle will cinch up enough to hold you in. :)

Actually Im going to Denver on Sunday for the sportsmans expo. I will just get my stuff then.
