Got after some sugar maple today at the yard. At least that's what my buddy thought it was. I picked this one out cause I noticed it had some black markings on the butt end of the log.

I'm pretty sure I've read about this on the forum and it is some type of pest that causes the coloring. I always thought it was spalting but I'm 99% sure it's not.

I'll leave that up to the more experienced guys on what causes that. image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg image.jpgimage.jpg image.jpgimage.jpg All the slabs are 2.5" thick and around 24" at the wider parts if I had to guess.

Yup, that's the stuff. I had a real nice log of that I just hauled in recently. Nice looking stuff!

[EDIT] Regarding the spalting/bug damage, I think maybe it's both. I always see bug holes around pockets like that. It's probably best to dry ones like that in a kiln to kill off any resident bugs, but I didnt. Adds character - you pay extra for that. :D

Too much sugar will do that to teeth as well. Think about that next time your ready to take a major bite out of a candy bar. Hockey players need not worry. Looks grand from here. Good work.

That is sold as ambrosia maple in NE...comes from beetles that get into the tree while it's still alive...spalting is a fungus that is streaky...not in pockets like you see there...honestly, if it wasn't specifically sold as ambrosia, I would classify it as spalting. My .02 cents
