I have a slow, old fashion hydraulic splitter and when I split stuff like this I set the round on the beam, pull both levers forward and it cycles in and out with these being the results. My question to people who love and swear by SuperSplitters is how many hits does it take to get through wood like Rock Maple? 20160830_130311.jpg 20160830_124430.jpg 20160830_114356.jpg

I have the hd model. Probably 2 hits for that gnarley piece.

The wedge is so sharp, it literally slices the wood grain if necessary.

I have the standard model and it would probably take 3 or 4 hits to cut through those knots, but it would get r done in no time. ( probably less than a minute)

Sometimes I will stand my splits upright (vertically) and slice through the end grain for the first split then lay it down. I was splitting some equally large beech without issue. My mechanical spliter is like a Heavy duty HD SS.

No Maple here, but the J model handles Oak knots and gnarly stuff with ease.
Rarely more than two hits on the worst pieces.
