I figured with all the pros that are on here there might be some one with an old, used, 1/2 beat up one sitting in a box of parts some where. Or someone who has a "cheap one" sitting around since they got a newer cooler model... A guy can hope right?

Nathan, for what it's worth, I bought a harbor freight spinner breaker combo for about $40 on sale last year, I don't use the breaker because I heard they're the first to go out, but the spinner has worked fine for the few loops of chain that I've spun with it. I don't use it a whole lot, but it seems to work okay. I don't know about getting replacement parts, I haven't had to deal with that yet.[/QUOTE]

Picked this up, today, for $15. It's a QV(Quick Vent)-6700, used by fire departments. It was at a small engine shop, and the guy said that they had burned it up by running straight gas in it. BUT. I removed the muffler and the p/c look great! BUT, I can't try to start it because someone has removed the flywheel assembly. So, does anyone have a flywheel assy. for this thing. I have found out that the CS-8000 used the same flywheel, and the CS-5500 used the same cooling fan. (Flywheel and fan are separate)..The CS-6700 with SN (023378-031240) used the exact same setup...Anyone?:msp_confused: If I can get this bad boy going, it'll make quick work of scrapping a car.

yes I have read you can use a hammer if you need to but i'd prefer to spin chains properly so I don't have any problems in the field with them. "Right tool for the job" and all... My dolmar/grasshopper dealer lets me use his for free when I supply his shop with fire wood for winter but he's 30mins out of the way when I need to make a fix or change the length of a chain...

Grandburg break and mend does pretty good spinning IMO. Breaker feature I find inconsistant lining up and a little fragile, but if you grind the rivets first they seem to get job done there and hold up on that end better. Spinner side seems to keep working. May be a low cost option.

I've started with less. I built an 036 once, starting with that black "handle molding" piece that covers the pistol grip.

Which reminds me- I have a good 036 cylinder if anyone needs it.

I don't have one (to swap or use), but I am wondering if you can do saw chains entirely with common hand tools. I know you can use a grinder to open them up, maybe you can tap them together with a ball peen and set or use a c clamp or something?

Yes you can... I have done MANY saw chains this way... I close them about 90% of 'done' w/ the ball peen, and finish them in the spinner... Works FASTER, and is easier...

THanks for all the replies guys. I usually buy the whole master link and grind the rivits and tie strap. So usng a nail punch has worked just fine for me in the past. My main plan is to make a receiver tool bench for my truck with vise, breaker/spinner, and other atachments. Then no matter where I am I can sharpen, repair chain, and fix a saw on the spot. I'll look into the Grandberg but I remember those costing just as much as a woodland pro bench mount spinner. Might just have to put a couple of my projects on the chopping block and buck-up and spend the $$$ on a woodland or harbor freight model.

I've got the HF combo and it's been just fine for the few chains I spin. The breaking anvil was junk though.......get an Oregon anvil.

I bought the Baileys combo. I find it easier/quicker to use a grinder to break the chain. I wouldn't waste money on a breaker if you already own any type of grinder.

Does a die grinder, 90* die grinder, regular angle grinder, 3-4 dremels, or 2 bench grinders count??? LOL... or even the most simple... A grinder attachement for my cordless drill. Yeah I have something to grind them with. I was thinking of just getting the woodlandpro spinner. $49 with 3/8 & 404 anvil. I have been finding tons of NOS chain lately at farm sales, CL, etc... I just broke 3x new 18in loops of oregon, and made 2x 30in loops out of them for $12! At that rate I suppose the $49 spinner pays for itself... 90% of my chain is 3/8 and 404 so no need to get all the extras just yet... Hmmm... How long is that bailey's sale going on for I wonder???

That will work fine. I use my bench grinder or angled die grinder mostly for cutting the chain.

Anyone have interest in a Jred 80? 97%complete and I have a 90-95% good piston and cylinder. I need to reassemble for it to work and probably add fuel lines but thought someone else might like/want it more than me...

Has been sitting at least 3 years, fuel tank was empty when I got a little while back. Compression feels good, I have not put a gauge on it. I would guess the fuel system will need attention but, I have not looked that closely at it. It is not a PRO model, no adjustable oiler, fixed high jet on the carb.

It needs a good cleaning, all the crap you see in the pictures should come off with some elbow grease.
