We do. 30% up front. I'll reduce or waive it if someone's really uncomfortable with the idea, but there is always a signed contract. I find most people don't object to this, it's pretty standard business procedure anymore.
 
In 14 years ,not dime, just a signature on the estimate sheet ,it's not the go ahead thats the problem it's collecting the money after thats the problem.
never lost a job, no thats not true lost 2 jobs this summer but no bigeee , just say 2 weeks we will be there, usually it's 3 but , it just seems when you say 2 weeks they say go ahead say 3 or 4 and they say we will considerate it.
Procedure I think will depend what is done in your neck of the woods.

10% on larger jobs, just for ernest money. I tell them it's refundable untill i show up to work. My thinking is it'll keep them from finding the low bidder and not calling me.

I have rolled up on a job after leaving a message on the phone, to find it had been done allready.
