I constantly deal with tan oaks and their defects. Here is a nice poic of a bark inclusion. The other pic is Slime Flux along with fungus, beetles, conks, some black knobs. This tree will come down in the next few days. While it is a native tree it is not a true oak so we can kill all of these we need to.

Yah, I have seen Tanaoks or Tanbark oaks grow in pairs a lot. They also smell weird when they are blooming. It is currently classified as being in the genus Lithocarpus, but there is evidence that it really should not be in that genus either (nor the genus Quercus, the true oaks). Some people really like them when they grow stunted and twisted. They are rally suseptible to SOD.
