I live in central Massachusetts and have noticed over the past decade or so a Tar Spot problem on the maple trees. 7-10 years ago I noticed a few spots here or there on the trees but thought it was due to the stress of hot summers or lack of rain.
Fast forward to 2014 and in late spring all the maple trees have the initial spots, and by September many of the leaves are turning brown and dropping off. The whole town seems to be infected.
Has it always been this way and I'm just opening my eyes and noticing the problem? Or is this something that should be reported to somebody. A quick search on the net doesn't ring any alarm bells...it is merely a cosmetic problem....
Any thoughts?
