After spotting some poison-oak vines on a tree several weeks ago, I remembered wanting to buy some Technu to keep on hand.

The reverse side of the box was amusing.

I had no idea that Technu was developed in the 1960s era as a cleanse for radioactive dust.

Did this ever happen to be included on the show Tactical to Practical ??

Interesting I have been thinking of getting some from Baileys to keep in my chainsaw box. Its real expensive around here.

This was the first time I've looked at a package. It was about $12 at an Albertson's grocery store shelf at the pharmacy end. Albertson's is a bit above average cost for stuff here. I'm going to check Walmart, Costco and Winco.

I read that a couple years back also, pretty interesting and yes it works...

Another trick I learned this summer.........it removes pine pitch/sap from your skin like nothing else.
with that in mind it also works very good for washing up them dirty sappy ropes:clap:

Technu is basically deodorized mineral spirits.

Usually within 15 minutes of contact, the urushiol binds to skin proteins. If it is washed off with soap and water before that time, a reaction may be prevented. After the antigen is fixed, however, it cannot be washed off or transferred to other areas.

Once bound to cell membranes, urushiol is virtually impossible to wash off and attached to cell membranes becomes a "warning flag" that attracts patrolling T-cells and initiates a full-blown immune response. Reference [Herbalgram (American Botanical Council) Volume 34: 36-42, 1995 by W.P. Armstrong and W.L. Epstein, M.D.]

The mineral oil helps disperse the urushiol so you can wash it off. Any detergent or soap will work well to because the emulsify and trap the oil. The best and cheapest way is soap and copious amounts of cold water.

My sister got me Bath and Body Works Juniper Breeze shower jell. I have found if use it before I go cutting (or mowing) I don't get it. As I am quite easily to it. I can get it if I am mowing when the wind is blowing. My best guess is that something in it blocks the PI from getting on my skin.

Thanks I could live with that price. Well If I am reffering to the same stuff and I dont have any tubes of cleaner (if this is in a tube?) anymore, but what walgreens had here was about $28 for a little tube maybe a half ounce? It had some grit to it and was white colored it worked ok. I went on a phase where I got into poision ivy a bunch of times in a row and it got pretty expensive treating myself.

Technu eh?

Having spent 12 years in a Nuclear field, I have been contaminated (Crapped up) a time or twenty. Good old duct tape, Maslin, and handi wipes work well for the most part. There's nothing about dust containing Radioactive particulates that makes it more difficult to remove than regular dust.

Mix the dust in with oil and grease, and you need some sort of surficant to break the surface tension and get underneath it to break it loose, suspend it and wipe it off. The stuff we used was a gazillion dollars a bottle because it was approved by chemistry not to pose a threat to supporting components, and was just plain old soap of some sort.

Poison Ivy? The :censored: evil crap grows like mad between Blueberry bushes, and I have some 20,000 Bushes.. I hate the stuff!

If I'm exposed, the best thing I have found is Ether. Plain old starting fluid.
Blast it immediately and dab it up with a Rag. Drop the rag in the trash, or bury it. Then wash the crap out of the point of contact with Simple green mixed 50/50 with water.

Diesel works well too, but ya have to get that off of your skin quickly as well.
The trick is to Dab the area, and not wipe.;)

Technu is some expensive stuff, I tried it, it works OK. Almost as good as plain ol' Simple green. It's just more Handy to have in the little bottle, than to keep an old Windex bottle of simple Green around.

The Pruning crew that I sometimes Hire, swear by Baby oil to clean the stuff off, but I think they are as immune to Poison Ivy as they are Habeneros.

I still havn't found a way to get poison Ivy out of gloves and clothes.
The technu dosn't do squat as far as I can tell.

Good topic! I'm pruning for the next several weeks, and have a few spots crusting up right now....Gawd I hate that:angrysoapbox: :censored: crap!

Stay safe!

Apparently, Zanfel, another product, actually wraps around some molecules of urishiol from poison-oak, and inactivates it.

Then Technu Extreme, is supposed to be able to break the bonds that urishiol has with proteins in the skin, alleviating most of the problem.

Regular Technu from what I read, needs to be used within 8 hours.

The cost differences seen may be due to the different types.

To someone who could suffer, I'd imagine that even $500 could seem like a bargain compared to pain and suffering. I haven't had real bad poison-oak rash yet, but had enough that I'd gladly have paid $100 for anything that would have reduced most itching and rash.

So $12 to $30 would seem like a bargain.

Yes tecnu oak and ivy
http://www.teclabsinc.com/products.cfm?id=1F5604C8-9D05-4675-56129F6D83DF2417&section=1

combined with ivy dry
http://www.ivydry.com/product_super.htm work wonders

Wash with the tecnu in the shower just make sure you rub it in for the 30 seconds they recommend before you get wet.

Then after the shower spray the areas you think you contact the poison oak or ivy with the ivy dry and you should be good to go if not just a small rash should appear and just use the ivy dry to eliminate the itching and you are good to go.
