CKelp has been a friend to the Bothe Napa Valley (state) Park by donating a nice little Eager Beaver 2.0

Many of you may not know that Calif State Parks are in some dire straights as they try to make the Governors budget targets. There are about 70 on the closure list. These are parks that either loose money, or just break even and have high operating cost. Bothe is on the list and is going through conversion to operation by the local Co-operating Association.

CKelp stepped up and donated a nice limbing saw after he heard about the situation. The State had removed all tooling prior to starting the final stages of conversion. But, with 1,800 acres of forest and a campground with miles of trails to maintain, the Association is trying to get replacement tooling donated. They are a non-profit and can give tax deductible donation letters for equipment and services, etc.

Now all we need are some falling saws (36" or better) because we have mature redwoods, doug firs and some oaks that will take equipment that size to saw through when they come down in a storm (like the one this week :(). We have a Timber Bear donated by a fellow in the south bay that will do for medium and smaller trees - so we are on our way ...

I thought this might be a call for us to donate all our Mini Macs.....

Good luck on keeping the park open and getting the equipment you need.

I could donate cutting labor in the park. Same with some friends of mine. We are about 30-45 minutes from the park and have small, medium, and large saws. A couple guys are expert climbers...

I agree this is a good idea. Please PM me so we can discuss off line? All the help they can get is greatly appreciated :)

CKelp offered to come over once in a while to keep the minimal Association equipment running. They are all good-hearted folks, but machine heads they are not :( This stuff is mostly for either trail clearing which has always been largely a volunteer exercise, or for the more proficient, if we get a log jam or a timber fall on a main access route. Something to get to work until the big boys get there.

Dept of Forestry will come in if a true emergency. But sometimes, it's a fall across the road to the water plant and it has to be cleared that day, or the like. Having options is always good.

On another subject, CKelp and I were discussing maybe having a GTG in the Park in the fall ?? The idea is to show off some antique saws, maybe have a demonstration for a school groups, maybe have a saw clinic for the volunteers. We could have a windfall fir bucked to a manageable log length and drag it to the Picnic ground area or something, so the old machines could get a work-out? Just thinking outside the box, but having a weekend to celebrate Coast Range Logging History might be cool :cool2:

If you-all have ideas, maybe we can work something out?

On the antique sie of this ...

The park has already been gifted a Bolens Thrifty (3010) that's 99% complete. I heard they'll be getting a Clinton with the rotating carb next week. So there may be something to display related to logging ::thumbsup::

I'll PM you in a sec. Will talk to the other guys to help figure out some details. I can also help with equipment repair too. Little things like fuel lines and carb kits I could donate. I don't have a lotta free $$$ so I couldn't pay for more expensive parts when needed however. I need to talk with Dave to combine our efforts. We live within about 15 minutes of each other...

A GTG/demonstration would be great, especially in a wooded location like the park. Folks in this area have been talking on and off about a GTG for a while now. Gives me some added motivation to get my projects done.

no problem! i may have another saw that i'll send your way after i go though it.. all i have to say it's heavy and yellow;)

Dave................you have something heavy and yellow and you didn't call me? Shame on you.:D

Let me know when you get it Dave. I might know a thing or two about old McCullochs (and the 4' "blade" REALLY has my attention). I could get it running and keep it safe for them (next to my own old Macs) when I'm not using it to cut at the park...:cool2:

bull sh** i'd would need that saw to keep the 272's in line and make them stop making most of the other saws cry:hmm3grin2orange:
also it sounds like there's a possibility getting a local club together... how about "wine country chainsaw and beer association"

also someone forgot to mention that i got a sweet lookin' craftsmen/poulan xxv and a parts saw to go with it cough*BrocLuno* cough

Hey now. OK it can stay at the Dave household. Gotta let the Yellow Fever spread a bit. You've gotta let me mess with it however. That bar/chain would come in handy for my 650 gear drive at times too. Might have to 'rent' that bar/chain from you (yes I've seen your ad). I have some shorter McCulloch bars/chains you can use too when that monster isn't needed. BTW-if it's a McCulloch capable of running a 48" bar, then it'll be making the 272's cry for a change!:D

Have I mentioned that I'm into Poulan/Craftsman XXV series saws too? Is that saw a 2.3VL or 2.3PSVL (with the AV buffers.........that's what the "VL" signifies) perchance? That's a model I've been a lookin' for. I'd be willing to buy or trade for it if it is. I have a green one (Poulan S25-CVA), but not the Craftsman red version. Here are the Poulan XX and XXV saws I have in Craftsman red. A Craftsman 1.9 and a 2.1A. Notice the 2.1A is non-AV.
