just put the muffler back onto my 066 after some extensive cleaning and forgot to put that aluminum looking heat shield jobber back under the muffler before i mounted it.....someone tell me please the casualties i will be plagued with if i don't replace it......................................thanks..........guff

seems I read here that wooddust from the fan will stick to the hot muffler and then during a hot run break off as a glowing coal and get blown out. I suppose the heat shield would prevent a bit of radiated heat onto the cylinder, but I would bet on the fire hazard being the biggy.

<s>I haven't heard or read anything about them either way, but just figured they are baffles to ensure the air from the flywheel/fan all passes by the cylinder cooling fins instead of taking the needless short circuit out of the system past the muffler.

I'd put it in.</s>

Never mind, I was thinking of the baffle behind the muffler.

Why would you remove the foil from the cases under the muffler? Maybe it's there to prevent cooking the case gasket which might cause problems with oil-tightness in the tank below, or some such. If your muffler exhales well enough it might not be a problem.

I'd put it back in. I think it's such a good idea, I added this sheild to my Dolmar 7900. It will keep the tank gasket from cooking. Only a couple of bucks from the dealer. Clean the case real well and smooth the heat sheild down with the back of a spoon or a screwdriver handle. It is self adhesive, if yours was loose you may already have a bar oil leak.
