My saw never see's hardwood all the wood that gets cut here is Fir,Hemlock, Alder and Maple (green), Balsam the wood ranges in diametre from 6"s to 48"s the most common is 16-24"s .

Skip tooth is pretty common chain full house is used on smaller saws like the 026s with 20" bars, it already takes long enough to sharpen the chain on the 46 :D

Dennis,

That Fir must throw some good heat,I burn all Pine in my garage although it does'nt last it sure does let out the heat in a hurry..:D

Pacific,

Sorry I did'nt pay more attention I did'nt realize all you work with is softwoods skip chain is a excellent choice sorry about that..

I would go for the 28 incher at the least. Those who don't know how to file keep taking out the dull teeth and end up with a 16 inch bar like gypo. Eventually he ends up just throwing a perfectly good saw away due to the fact that they dont make 4" bars.

I have a 046 and I use a 28" bar. But I cut mostly douglas fir. Hardwoods would probably want a shorter bar. A 24" would be good.

Brand does make a huge difference. I've found the Sandvik-Windsor to both last longer and have a more durable replaceable sprocketnose tip. I'm not talking about the cheapo laminated bars-those are garbage! The Oregon bars are the softest and shortest lasting bars out there, and the Oregon Powermatch, the single rivet tip gets loose. I've had testing done on several brands of bars so these aren't just speculation. I've also cut quite a few million board feet of timber and have learned from my experiences.
