so i got a tip from a friend of mine that a local construction crew was clearing a bunch of trees from a park in town. went to check it out last night and indeed there was a massive pile of logs. mostly cottonwood and soft maple, but as i picked thru i noticed a huge (for around here) black walnut crotch section sitting on the end of the pile. since the crew was gone for the day my original plan was to take off work at lunch and swing by the site to see if they'd give me some logs. then i thought well i better swing by before work to talk to the lads. glad i did. me: "quite the pile of logs you got there..." construction dude: "yep. you want some?"
had to shake off my disbelief for a second because it seems like most all the logs you see are already spoken for. so i told him i'd love to pick up the walnut crotch section and another trunk piece and he said he'd set em aside. well i'm mighty glad i stopped by before work because the entire pile of logs (including a 6' diameter silver maple were completely chipped up by noon). would've sucked to come by after lunch and have the guys tell me "oh yeah you could've had all you wanted but we just chipped em up a few minutes ago...."
anyways, not only did the guy set em aside for me, he volunteered to load em on my trailer for me with their skidsteer grapple. mind you, these were not light logs, and it would've taken me some serious thinking on how to get em on my trailer. so this dude was about the coolest guy ever and we talked for a bit as he was interested in chainsaw milling and he says he'll keep my number for any more logs he thinks are nice enough. not only that, he actually thanked me as i finished loading up. can't beat that for nice afternoon!
it's about 30" on the butt and closer to 50" thru the crotch. my trailer is 14' for scale. them's gonna be some sweet slabs. i can't wait to mill it!
