OK, I've put 4 never washed red shop rags, a pair of dirty White Ox gloves and two used hickory shirts in the washer. The washer is a front loader, if that makes any difference.

If 4 shop rags are not enough, I shall empty what is left that is appropriately out in the shop, into the wash. If only my lost keys would reappear, harmony in the world would improve. I believe the rinse cycle may be starting. Front load washers should have a lighting option for the inside.

I declare this to be a partial myth. The hickory shirts do not seem pink at all. The White Ox are now pinkish.
I ran it through twice--the second time added all the shop rags I had.

Or does one have to use HOT water? I have a fear of washing anything in HOT water.

My wife gives me the 5th degree when I wash clothes. I don't sort anything, I just throw it all in the washer and wash it with cold water.

Works for me.

Maybe trying to dye clothes with red shop rags violates some kind of cosmic balance or something.

Give it another shot. Fresh batch of shop rags and hot water this time. Try to get the rags from a place that has a rag service. Those rental rags will bleed if you so much as spit on them.

Oh...note from the wife....throw a couple of cups of vinegar in with the rags and shirts. Vinegar helps set colors when you're dying.

The only thing you can't wash in hot water is wool. I found that out the hard way.

if you use spic an span in your wash with your regular soap it takes bar oil out of your pants

So this is how cabin fever starts in Warshington eh? Next will be pictures of Used Dog wearing clothes. Or maybe the "Who is Downing a Bottle of Aqua Vitae With Me Tonight" thread.

Well, I am snowed in for a couple of days until it melts or I snow scoop my way out, or I pay for somebody to plow. But I'm done with the shop rag experiment. I think I'll be busy moving the white stuff around.
