Lasers...

Well I can say this in the trimmer buisness a 25cc Robin 4 stroke just blows away a 25cc Robin two stroke in heavy grass. The torque is a huge diffrence.

Seriously, after the latest round with the California CARB restrictions, the 2 cycle engines we are now using will be radically changed by 2010.

All kidding about laser's aside, the plain fact is that small engines are blamed for 5% of the air pollution problem in California. The environmentalists display posters showing 1 chainsaw equals the air pollutants of 10 cars.

Since, in California, they aren't going to give up their freeways or cars, guess where the crackdown will be focused!

One of the options is the catalytic converter technology, but imagine the heat from having a 300F deg converter 4" from your left hand on your chainsaw!

My best guess is that chainsaws will be very quiet 4 strokes, 30% heavier, with the rpm limited to 8000.

good point shooter but think about the difference in run time.. just personally aint buying ,,not that im sayin u are..
my opiniong isthe saws have reached an apex of wt to power ratios.. as to how much that issue really helps get a job done..dolmer 7900 is somethin aint it..so i hear..
the cause people,, will probably get there way.. whether it was real or not..cause its an easy target .. and they gotta have one..,jmo
one thing i know ,,with the rite mix.. i can run my saw in my living room 8 times longer than i can my nissan pickup..:D
without the smoke deectors goin off:)

FWIW the emmissions attributed to small engines is total bunk.
In the future you will see a mix of four stroke, hybrid and clean two stroke motors. I dont see two cycles going away anytime soon as so much can be done to clean them up, yet the still are cheaper and lighter than four cycles.

I gotta agree with Butch. Seems like there has been a rumor going around for years that they have been experimenting with lasers trying to get something portable that won't start the woods on fire. What the heck are we going to use for chaps?

Ben, 2 strokes are gone by 2006, IMO.
Wanna bet? Skidoo, and Polaris have already released simple indirect injected two cycles the meet the 06 emmission standards and many years beyond. Redmax, husky, echo, and a few others have compliant two cycles. Besides the emmissions laws for ope operates on the credit sytem where a clean engine will count against the emmissions of a dirty one.
