Can you hookup a pressure sensor to monitor backpressure? Location of muffler port may make difference if in front or on side in rear, not just shear are, and then affect escape of exhaust and escape and reflection back of charge, of course depends on port angles/size/engine design that the 461 may be optimized for. I would trust the builders gut feelings here, you could read Gordon Jennings tuning 2cycle book 20 times but theory will only go so far with so many factors involved.

Wiggs planted a seed in my mind of using an electric motor for a load cell. Your drive system may be able to be used to drive that motor......
Do you mean a generator? I thought about using a generator also but my thoughts were they have a lot of mass to get spinning and they usually have air cooling involved. The more speed the more drag from the cooling system moving more air. You need something to consume the energy your holding back. I guess maybe some large batteries could consume the power generated but they would need to be discharged.
 
JJ, remember a few years ago when everyone said that you had to raise the exhaust to get gains?

Between Wigglesworth and Andyshine those myths were busted all to hell.

Hopefully in the future we can use dyno testing to dispel a few more myths.

I'm really looking forward to getting Chad's dyno and taking his design a little further.
Yep, and I will bet that you find on the dyno that the newer saws will make the most power at a more moderate RPM range, but they will make big power at that range.
 
He was talking about motors, freq drives, and stuff that was way over my head......
Using electrical load allows easier data capture. I'm trying to get my head around a dyno build but electricity makes me feel like a pig staring at a washing machine, I'm usually happy if the smoke doesn't come out.
With some help I'll end up with an alternator from a generator and use a bar heater or something with a big resistive load. I'll measure voltage across a current shunt with a micro processor and log it onto a sd card. Graph it all on a laptop.
It's currently project #67.


Great thread though - managing to make an Aussie care about baseball is a special achievement. Even if it's only relative to the rest of this thread.
 
I sure am ready to see Mastermind, Brad , or somebody go through a 362c !! Curious to see the potential it has. Considering a Dolmar 421 with a 14" bar for my small saw. That will make my hobby and days of cutting firewood interesting? 421, 362c, 441c, It would be nice to throw a Husky 390 ported in with that group

That would make a very fine lineup of saws!

If I had more time, I'd likely just go buy a 362C, or have you send me yours. I'm gearing down to take a break though. I'm trying to spend more time with family. The 362 is not a hard saw to get good gains out of. I'm sure the 362C is no different.
 
My tax season is finally over, and I look out the window and the ground is Snow Covered, in mid April!

Looks like I will be getting together with MechanicMatt to do some cutting late tomorrow just the same.

I'm looking forward to it, and to getting his impression on the 362. Since he is a Husky guy, his impression should be more "trusted" on this site.
