Did and emergency storm job today, Father's Day Special. When I got home I tied into this Elm in my yard that has been dying. This is a good example of the strength of an Elm hinge, especially the hinging property's of the root flare.

The tree was gunned for the star on the house, and as you can see was right on target and carrying some good momentum when it came to an abrupt stop. The felling cut was placed so I can come back and grind the stump efficiently. Stump shot was 1/2" in the negative direction, this also contributed to the hang factor.

I thought it was pretty neat so I took some pics.

That's amazing!

Had one similar on Saturday - only about 6" dia.. It didn't make it through the winter and was leaning heavily towards the neighbors fence. I wanted it to go 180 to the lean so I roped it, notched it about 1/3 through and back cut to about a 1" hinge. Started pulling with my truck when the snatch block somehow opened and the tree started back toward the fence. It stopped when the back cut closed - long enough for me to redo the snatch block and pull it where I wanted it.

I have removed quite a few of those here and they are pretty easy to direct when they stop 2/3 rds of the way down. Nice pic.

Good to hear that The Power of Piss Elm is doing something positive for someone.

I have had "large" river birch hang up like that doing residential...
