ROCKY POINT, N.C. — Tornadoes spun off tropical systems and touched down in eastern North Carolina early Friday, killing three people and injuring more than two dozen others. Buildings also were damaged, and power outages were reported.
One of the victims, a girl, was killed at a trailer park in Rocky Point (search), north of Wilmington, said Andie Thomas, director of the emergency department at Pender Memorial Hospital. She said at least 15 people were hurt in the trailer park, including the girl's parents.
A search team was called to the trailer park because of reports that children might be missing after winds toppled power lines and ripped the roofs off several dwellings.
A clerk at a nearby store said emergency officials have blocked the road to the damaged area.
"People are telling me it looks really bad down there. Trailers are upside down," said Sherry Hall.
Identities of the three victims who were killed weren't immediately available, said Scott Whisnant, spokesman for Cape Fear Hospital (search) in Wilmington. A mass casualty plan was activated to treat the injuries.
Possible tornadoes were also reported in four other communities Friday, with injuries and building damage. At least five homes in Harnett County were destroyed Thursday by severe weather when the remnants of Tropical Storm Bonnie (search) blew across the state.
