we have this new climber and he was willing to work as he says!!! takes a week off after working for only 4 days and then, has an injury with his arm; works for another 3 days and now is out today with poison ivy!!! I don't get it where do we find reliable people to work and actually show up daily....Just needed to vent!!!

I would have him fired so fast or give him one chance to smarten up you can still work with poison ivy thats not a good excuse even

Climbers worth a **** have a lot of options, my guess is you aren't the best option.

But if the guy was worth a **** and had so many options he wouldn't need to play games. I would think he would simply tell you when he is available and if you dont like it then oh well. having so many options and all. I would say its a classic case of drunk/lazy/high "tree climber".

You made my point, that guy wasn't worth ****. I think the o.p,got what he paid for.Employers consistently complain about employees without thinking about why they keep attracting chitty help. If you have nothing to offer aside from a weak paying job youre not going to get alot in return. Nobody here is shocked if they buy a chipper for 3k and it doesn't produce for ****, but everbody wants a guy to bust his azz for 18hr.

Your right for the most part. Except where I am you really can't pay any climber much over 18 n still expect to compete. Unless you are paying cash but then that's n issue all it's own. I guess you threw me off with your previous post saying "your not the best option" which implied to me that the climber was to good for that employer.

Thank you everyone for the response

The truth is we pay him really good; and we do have benefits as well....however, I forgot to mention he is in his early 20's which could explain him being irresponsible. The truth is we are so busy right now that we would love to get rid of him but, we need another to replace him. By the way, he is not that great of a climber but, he can get the job done.

U think he's canceling on u to do his own side work? Is he not coming back after being paid? One thing I found that works well is to pay guys on Wednesdays, keeps them showing up Monday morning and they usually stick around for the rest of the week.

i hate reading crap like this.I love tree work.I am a licensed arborist in Ct. I work a night job right know that I hate and would love to be doing tree work full time. MY focus is toward PHC but I an willing to do anything. There are people in this industry who love what they do and are happy to go to work everyday. It's the slubs that never picked up a book about tree bio or proper tree care that are coasting there way through it to make a buck. Then there are those of us who love it. Find someone who loves caring for trees and you will have the best employee you can ever hope for.

As Joezilla suggested, some guys get a paycheck and dip out for a while or permanently... Usually the high turnovers are the groundies! Seems we are in a constant state of training this time of year. Some guys don't last, some don't like or can't do the work. Of the ones that do and can we only keep a few. Seems we have to see 5-10 to find 1-2 keepers. Attitudes and reliability are priceless. Pay em well and tell em when they do good work. Happy employees are good employees!!! We had a climber quit last year with 2 days notice. Nice guy, quit cause he didn't get the raise he felt he had comin, and he didn't feel like askin for it, didnt feel like he should have to ask. His production was pretty good. But by the time we had figured the raise thing out he had already made up his mind... Not to bad of a loss though, he always showed up, but drank heavily almost every night. We are probably better off without him! I've seen fist fights behind the chipper...if you can't get a cohesive crew your S.O.L.
