I had a female friend of mine. Tell me that she had two chainsaws when I asked her and told her I was interested in chainsaws well she said that some guy she knew or something had worked on this homelite it fired off just yesterday. She came over glanced at the saw for second and then we spoke and she told me she would take $40 for it. I told her that I would pay her the following day. I then took it and brought it into my shop opened it up tried to pull the rope and it was just Free pulling. I took the starter off and it got a broken crank bolt. should I pay the $40 and fix this or is it even worth the trouble?

if you shook hands on the deal, your on the hook for the $40 bucks, should have looked it over before making a deal.

I agree w/ @Ridgehiker, but I'll qualify that. How good a friend is she and how well does she know you? If she knows and trusts you, you can be honest with her, tell her the crankshaft was broken and maybe she will let you off the hook. If she is a casual friend I'd say you owe her the money.

That looks like a very old fracture. Maybe ask if the helpful fellow could make it fire just once before buying it.

Your offer may have been predicated on assumption that it actually fired. Certainly it did not.

Depends on the relationship, I guess. $40 won't change my day but I don't like being lied to.
