Well I have a 357xp, 371xp and 372xp and I am very pleases with the performance of all three but, I would like to have a big saw for when felling big trees. I live here in Iowa so the trees would not be any bigger than say 40 inches in diameter. I know the 371/372 would do just fine but I want something that would be faster when cutting up the tree. I think new would be the best way but used could be an option if not made anymore. I think the 3120 is not an option because it is just too big. I geuss it would be between the 385, 390 or 395 new or 288? used. Oh, and it has to be a husky,(after seeing how well the 372 dominates stihls of the same size I just cant buy anything else). Which one out of the 3 is the hot rod for its respectable size? How does the 288 fare against the 3.

If you are a Huksy man and want a real step up from a 372 I say go all the way to a 395. Heavy, but if you are talking 40 inch trees then the 385/390 doesn't take you far enough, in my judgement. I say heavy, but smooth as glass. You can get them used for good deals sometimes because they are not the fashion statement a 660 is.

Thats what I was thinking in the back of my mind, I just wanted some more experienced opinions. Is the new 390 kind of a turd or what? What about a 288? I had a guy around my home town say that a 288xp that they run cuts better than there 3120. Of course I understand all the variables like bar chain etc etc.. what about big bore kits on the 385 or 390s?

I haven't run a 288 for a while so I can't remember, but seems like it wasn't smooth like the new ones. I am sure it didn't cut strongr than a 3120. I haven't run a 390 yet, and will guess its basically a slightly smoother 385 with a better clutch. Stock I don't think it's enough of a step up for what you want. I understand 385's mod well, so that could be a route that would have some bragging rights. If bragging rights are important, the 395 won't get you many. But I like mine anyway.

I like my 7900 better than a 385, but it isn't quite the step up in power you describel either. Welcome to your next saw dilema. Just when you solve this one you'll encounter another. Slippery slope here.

Ya Its quite a delema to me. Bragging rights are very, very important to me. Mabee I will have to go with the 3120?

It still isn't that simple. On this forum my read is you get more bragging rights with an 880. Won't fit your existing bars, though.

So you're willing to work with a saw that is more cumbersome than you need just to have bragging rights? Ok. Granted, the smallest bar I own is 32", and use my 660 way more than I should. But I think you should be more individual than that. Get a smaller saw and mod it out. (or get the 3120 and mod it, whatever) Heck, go to Dean at Washington Hot Saws. Last I heard he could get new Huskies cheap and mod them out for you, thus a brand new saw with mod job all in one place. Dean's saws definitely aren't slow either.

Put the crack pipe down and step away from the saw dude. Tell you what sonny, if you really believe that you've never gotten your hands on a stihl that's tuned right. :ices_rofl:

Yeah right... a stihl tuned RIGHT, like it would be possible.... heck, stihl cant even make good air filtration and theyl shake your hands off when youre trying to run em.... and the oh so ugly color scheme....

Here we go. I guess if your girly hands are that sensitive they shouldn't be running a chain saw. Maybe you'd be suited better to one of those back massagers, lmfao... :help:

When you say stuff like that it always makes me believe that you have either never had a stihl to run or you just don't know what your doing with a saw... I'm sure there are plenty of guys in here that'll run their:cheers: stihl's up against your huskys any day of the week bro. Don't be bashin', it's just makes you sound silly...

Not half as silly as that post. I think you may have cornered the market.:hmm3grin2orange:

Agreed. That is yet another reason why I will not buy a Husky. Everyone I know that owns one has some sort of chip on their shoulder. Maybe its the fuel mixture fumes.

The 288 has the lowest power output of those, and it is an old construction, without the Air Injection. It is also heavier than the 385/390, but many people seem to love them anyway....

The 395 has an outboard cluch, while the 385/390 has an inboard one - in case that is a consern of yours.....

I have never touched any of those models, personally.

Eh

It's not like that dude. I like huskys, I really do. I've liked all the ones I've run, except the wife's and we all know that story about that POS husky. Stihl, Husky, Dolmar, Shind, JR, they all have their purposes. I don't hate any of them if they do their job and don't break down when you need'em. I will say husky isn't the saw it used to be since being taken over by Electrolux, and that's from die hard husky guys that swear by them. I like'em all if they cut for me. Right now I prefer my 7900 to any of'em. This dude has obviously not run a lot of saws to just come out making statements like that. We're trying to kill that mentality that there is say one all superior saw maker out there. They all have good saws and POS saws.

I don't think the 385-390 will offer the jump that you are looking for. I would opt for the 395. They can be found pretty reasonable. It is all in what you want. I have a woods ported 385 and it's a mean saw. I wasn't so impressed in stock form.

Get the 395. I own a 3120, love it for milling, but my 066 would fall any tree I'm likely to ever see. 8lb differential or so between the 3120 and 066, 395 is similar weight to 066.
