Ok good. I've had some serious trannies go through the wood that was firewood and went like 6", I believe it was sugar maple. It was in a pile in the rain so maybe that's why that case was so bad. Thanks for fast help fellas
 
If its not too deep oxalic acid will safely dissolved it away. Make up a 10% solution - spray/paint in on and leave it until the black fade and then wash off.
It can slightly bleach certain woods so maybe do a test run first.
While building this bench I accidentally sprayed metal dust over the top with an angle grinder and after a day it showed up as black marks on the wood.
LHS is before and LHS is after wetting with oxalic.
