Thoughts on mechanical split tails?

I've been using a grigri and a ID . They work great and can swap over rope midline. I have a almost brand new spiderjack that has only been used once . It's a pain to redirect or move my rope. I'm slow in a tree to begin with. I can't remember the last lime I was in a tree and did not move my rope . I have 3 ropes all 200' so that's a lot of extra work for me

true, but to me storage is a consideration with a $275. mechanical hitch. I don't want my zz stepped on or hit with anything or rained on etc etc. So often I store it seperately when not in use. If you ever take yours off you have to thread the whole line. My termination knot is a bowline so it is well out of the way of the release lever. Much better set up.

why on earth would you have ANY climbing line 200' long in Pa. let alone 3 of em? silly

I also carry 3- 200' ropes on my truck. I use 200' ropes because I do a lot of tall pine removals, and it seems like every other week I'm cutting off a few feet here or there from nicks and abrasions or need a couple feet to make a split tail with a blakes. I bought a 120' rope ONE time, had to cut off 30' cause a ground guy nicked it with a saw and bam. Couldn't use it in a 50' tree. Longer is better for me.

I always buy mine long too. I've bought 200' poison ivy a few times with a spliced eye. I often get it on special and it's a great deal. I cycle mine. Generally the old 200' rope will get cut down to two ropes. Sometimes they've only got 165' on special. I've picked it up for as little as $200 for 200' with a spliced eye which is a fantastic bargain in my opinion.

Sometimes that 165' line was not long enough. Not that often these days though. That only buys you 80' on doubled rope. I often switch out to a smaller rope in the canopy if there's a lot of work to be done. Having my tail hanging down just makes troubles for ground guys and I hate hauling it up when I'm in a different part of the canopy.
