Beings we are all Arborist and dont spike our trims, how do you avoid throwballing dead?

Which trees do you dread to throwball I.E. excurrent pine, popular etc..

Do you throwball or simply throw you rope?

Do you throwball taller and swing over or rather throwball the tree your trimming?

If I'm wearing out 1-3 throwballs every 6 months is that standard/

Wrong, not if you let the ball down and take it off on missed shots. i don't do that all the time, but if there's hardscape around that the ball might hit, I usually do.

Also, when a ball splits, try sewing it, using shoe goo, and/or dipping it in the liquid plastic coating.

I just bought two new double ended 12 ouncers from Sherrill, and have two to do minor repairs on, that makes six in the kitty. My oldest one is at least 8 years old.

What do you mean, " throwballing dead" ? Risking crotching in to a dead limb? That can happen, use binoculars if needed, or make sure there is a good crotch just below as a backup if the actual point hit is suspect.

Whatever, exactly why I don't like the word arborist, tends to lump one in with everyone else, and I'm sure others that love the word don't want to be lumped in with me. The word arborist does not need to be capitalized, it is not that important, then again niether is the Pope. If its that hard, put on the spurs.

Holy smoke the trees you have a throwball 8 years old! Roger!

Good point well taken also I agree whole heartily with you clearance.Spike it if in doubt of strong tie in.:rockn:

If trimming tree there is no reason to wear spikes ............. end of, there is always a way and spikes dont evan come in to it.

Ha Ha Ha. Makes me glad I only do takedowns these days.:D

Matty , so you spikeless climb on potential dead where you cant see your tie in? After you I guess throwball it.?

To solo workers, how can you put twice the weight to test your tie in if your working alone?

Beowolf dont you miss being in great shape and saving your knees? Do you throwball removals matty?

I hate throwballing, I'm crap at it, I doubt I'll wear out my throwball ever!
My other half made a bow and arrow and he's absolutely deadly with it. If he's not on a job, I just make do and try to look like this is my one bad day with a throwball.

I've honestly never heard of putting twice the weight on a line to test it. Not a bad idea, though.

I have a throwball at both ends of my throwline, that way on the rare occasion that my ball gets stuck, I can just throw the other end. I also use a Big Shot (capitalized? I think so.) to get the ball up there pretty regularly. It's much easier than throwing it, which I still suck at after years of practice.

hey, i guess im not the only sucky thrower on here...lol with so much practice i should be alot better. i use a canvas throw bag ( square one ) ive had it for 6 years and it still works good.

Ive got a bad ass idea for a bag launcher....a low draw weight crossbow!!! accurate and has plenty of power for a large bag and it can carry a spool of leader line on it!!!

i love the throw ball

Being nice with a throwball is like being a running back who can tear through a devensive line, make his own holes, and slide his way into victory.

or maybe not

I dont think i would ever tie off in somthing im not happy with and i usualy always inspect a final anchore point before working off it.

Yeah i do on removals throw ball on removals ,the only time i put on the spikes is when there is a verticle pole left as i dont like leaving stubs to work off, spose i just dont like wearing spikes unless its a necesity, they only feel right when working off a flip line not off a life line, but i do enjoy using them.

I once saw a dude thining a lime wearing spikes his company went on to be one of the biggest council contractors around here, i could not ever work for him after seeing that, if thats what he expects to get the job done.

Easy.

Tie one end of your life line against the trunk and bounce test the other side with all your body weight.

Or if you want to be really smart put a 2way ma onto the single line tail and give it heaps. see diagram.

Xtremetrees, don't you miss being able to get to the top of the tree in less than an hour and a half?:D
Fortunately, no knee problems yet and I happen to be in really good shape. I had no idea that climbing without spikes is a recommended way to lose weight and get in shape.

Going around wrecking trees ha, look kids I made that stump :p:clap:

Beo whats those tree you trimmed 8 years ago looking like?

Wasn't going to comment until you saw fit to badmouth removals. An hour and a half to get into a tree? An hour and a freakin half?

Yeah kids, look at that stump from the silver maple I took down because it was dying and threatening to fall on a house.
Yeah kids, look at that stump from the willow I took down because it had broken over onto someone's car.
Yeah kids, look at that stump from that tree I took down after it was hit by lightning.
Yeah kids, look at that stump from the white pine I took down when the snow broke the top out of it.
How are those trees doing that you topped just to give someone a view? Or was that a different Extremetrees?

By the way, I never said I use spikes when trimming because I don't. I just haven't had to do a trim in over seven years. But the ones I did trim are still alive and well.

Why do you only do removals?
You prolly own a chipper and a bucket.. ha
Youll be glad to know them topping view cuts fed my family. And I did spike them working for the man. Do i now, no.

During my 6 months wit the topping view comp. retopping was some of the jobs i ran across. All dead infested tops with profuse sucker/riser regrowth. Try retopping on a bunch of dead. A hard day is 13 trees.
If them crews was to throwball them toppin cuts theyd have less falls. But we just spiked um all up.;
