How do you tell the age of the timberwolf splitters. Is there a serial number somewhere on them that tells the date of manufacture. I am going to look at a used one on Wednesday with "low hours". Just wondering where to look for a build date, or other things to look at to tell me how much usage it actually got. The splitter is a TW-5.

is it the one in Kenosha?
I don't know about the date of manufacture, but call or email Don at Timberwolf. He will tell you all you need to know.

I am pretty sure on the serial number it had model number followed by numbers; the first 5 numbers tell the year. IE TW7xx040412xxxxx would mean it was a 2012 model, etc.
I'm not 100% sure - i'll check mine tomorrow again but I think that was how they are numbered. And overall; definately call Don at TW as stated before if any other things are needed.

I picked it up tonight and brought it home. The tag on it is like this- 11-02-4369. I stopped at the timberwolf dealer by my house on the way home and compared it to the new ones he had out front. I am assuming that mine was built in November of 2002. The new ones all have numbers 11-11-18008. I bought it from a guy that used to have a tree service. He originally had a TW-5FC and he hated it. said it had no power. So he had the dealer bring out the TW-5 and he traded them the FC for the one I bought and he liked it a lot better, plenty of power. Shortly after he got the TW-5 he bought a processor. The splitter has been sitting for the last couple of years with sporadic use. He estimated maybe 100 cord split with it. It has the log lift and the 4-way. I plan to order the table grate for it, we split with an elevator, so the table grate is a must have. It is missing the jack leg that is under the beam opposite the motor. We usually keep it hitched to the 4-wheeler, but I think I may need to locate one. It has a couple of issues that I am hoping some of the members here can help me with.
1. The back side of the forward/reverse, auto cycle levers drip hydraulic fluid. There are caps on the back of the levers with 4 bolts in them. He said they leaked from the day he got it. Had it in for warranty when it was new but then they started again. He made is own gaskets for it to try and fix it but it still drips. Not sure if this is from sitting, or is this a known problem with the Prince valves.

2. The housing that connects the hydraulic pump to the Honda motor has 2 cracks in it. The housing looks like it is maybe cast aluminum. The cracks look like they have been there for a long time, and do not seem to affect anything. Just going to keep an eye on them. The pump is kind of protected, not sure how you could of dropped a round on it and cracked it, but you never know.

It is definitely going to take some getting used to. We currently have a 22 ton Iron and Oak vertical/horizantal splitter with one lever. I am hoping it will increase my production for splitting firewood. I got it for a good price. It was only 25 minutes from my house to go pick it up. I am even considering reselling it. We will see. I will try to take some pics tomorrow and post them .

The guy was from Kenosha. Saw it on Craigslist. If I did not buy it, it was getting shipped to Pennsylvania. There is a new TW-6 on the local craigslist for $8900.

I think that after you use it a bit, that Iron and Oak will be the one for sale...
