Hey guys..well..I've decided to make a career change..I start school in early Jan to go through the motions to become a law enforcement officer...I need something that has more job security and a better retirement plan...I just quit my job with PennLine Services on Friday...gotta do some advanced drills with the Corps so I can focus on school full time..Other than that..I'm sure I'll be doing this stuff on the side as alot of ppl around here know I'm always up for the ocassional job and doing the quality work I've offered should they need it..I'm sure I'll be around here from time to time..but not like I used to..if anyone wants to stay in touch..shoot me a pm and I'll give you my number..
You guys have been great with all your advice and wisdom..thanks to all who have contributed their help..

Happy Holidays..and Merry Christmas..

Take Care..
Travis

Cool man sounds like a good choice to me, find a department with a nice 20 year retirement and youll be back doing trees in no time. If you get in a big department youll have your own built in client pool for doing side jobs with trees.

best of luck with it WM. as you know though, once the chips get in the blood nothing else satisfies for a job.

stay safe travis!

Do what you have to do for the family Devil Dog.

it was a pleasure knowing you here.you're taking care of your self and doing the right thing.if i was smart i would be getting out of this business too.i am seriously giving it some thought.

best of luck and Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year!

I haven't been on here long enough to know you but good luck with your career change. As mentioned you can always do a little tree work on the side. I've been going back and forth between trucking and tree work for 10+ years, however I was trucking before that. If you take too long of a break from tree work it's easy to get a little sloppy, have a harder time physically (even if you exercise, which I do), and loose some confidence when you do tree work on the side. Anyway good luck.

Yeah I agree with this. I drive a truck myself and am looking to get back into tree work again. I stopped several years ago after getting hurt in a tree and have been doing it on the side ever since.

I have a small dump, small chipper, Alpine Magnum grinder. I was doing lots of work a couple of years ago but it is pretty slow lately. Now I find that I don't do the work often enough to be as smooth and precise as I was when I was full time, so I tend to shy away from jobs that would have previously been a no brainer and now I second guess myself and hand jobs to bigger companies that I am not comfortable with.

.......and yes, no amount of exercising prepares you for the demands of tree work besides tree work itself. As a law enforcement officer, you need your body to be 100% and if you go out on the weekend and do a removal and lug logs around you will be either really sore or you could hurt yourself enough to make work tough or impossible come Monday. I've done it.

I've been in the service now for about 15+ yrs now..and doing tree work helps me stay in shape..but trust me..the Marines dont let guys that dont work out stay for long..."its not the age honey..its the mileage" to quote Indiana Jones..I've have reoccuring knee and shoulder injuries for yrs that are going to continue to get worse if I keep ignoring them as long as I have now..I know being a cop/sherriff etc.. is no picnic by any means..but if I get hurt there...its not going affect my liveliehood as serverly..ie..I get hurt by a bad guy..obviously they'll pay for me to recover..just seems to be a better deal to me..there is a SHAT load of competition around here now..and it seems like there just isnt enough money left in it anymore to try and do it full time..law enforcement is alot like the military too..always training to take care of the bad guys..anyways..thats my 2 cents..

You WILL miss it. Nothing like being blown around in a hundred foot plus canopy on a fresh spring day with a killer view of the riv or something.

Was just a few years ago a guy's wife was on here that was trying to get her husband just one last climb that had lost use of both of his legs. AS guys made it happen and everyone could relate to it.

Probably not to worry about an ex Marine's conditioning. That comes with the turf. I am just about 61 and a typical day for me is weights and core work in the morning in the gym. In the evening a 35 to 40 minute run or a ball breaking hour and a half racquetball match. PI has the best personal trainers on earth. You never forget that stuff.
