Hung out w/a tree service for a couple of hours this afternoon, SOandSO and son. great bunch of guys. they were doing a tree removal in a church yard. nice, probably nearly 4' red oak with church on one side and graveyard fence on the other. they had a bobcat, 50' boom on a truck and dump truck. very interseting talking to them and watching them work, but to get to the point. when i got there, dad was in the bucket, limbing the tree out. Son had been up there but dad is too impatient on the ground. Son told Dad to put the boom truck on the other side of the fence, Told Son he didn't know what he was doing. Dad did good as far as it went, but when he went to take out the top, (25') it fell and bounced back over on the truck, caved the side of the truck in. Hydraulicks wouldn't work after that. Boom extended 50'. Stabilizer legs, boom, nothing. worked. Well, Dad had to climb down. Son was pissed, and I had to go. The hour or so I was there, I talked to son about chainsaws, Baileys, tree work, and stuff. Son was sharp, Dad was in the tree, making mistakes. Has got to be hard to know when to turn it over, the older I get, the more that becomes apparent. I hated to see that happen to them boys, like most folks, just trying to make a living. But you gotta make "dad" realize at some point, let me hadle it.

mike,
i can relate to that story. my father taught me a lot about tree work. he actually helped me get started. one day my brother and i were taking down a huge maple over a house. not only big but a lot of big. towards the end of the day i started to send big pieces. i was sending the top when my father wanted to help(84 years old). he did one thing he always insisted i never do,wrap the rope around a body part. he wraped it around his wrist a few times and my brother and i did not see it. when i sent the top he looked like Mary Poppins flying around. he said "this is the end of high angle work for me" he is happy now just watching. marty

its frustrating. my father-in-law asks me to cut up trees now and then on his property. i know he wants to be helpful and feel useful, but some times he just gets in too close when i'm running the saw. i usually just stop and say i need a rest, but i've been tempted to sit him down and say how bad it would be if there was an accident.

Saw the boys pull out Wednesday, in the evening, during my bike ride. Flat right thru ther, where you can see, a truck, pulling a trailer, I'm guessing the bobcat was on there, and then the boom truck pulled out. knocked the crap out that truck, I do know that.:( These are local boys, when I see them again, I will stop and shoot the sh*t w/them. Told them about this site, but i"m not sure, other than son, that they knew what the interenet was?
