Did most of the tree that I decided to start climbing for today...big half dead maple in the front yard of my other house...had trouble getting the line set but got there ok...

Was working starting to work the tree when dude shows up and offers to tkae the tree down for 250 bucks....

umm...got three time that in just my climbing gear...that i'm standing there in...

Jeez...
Can't blame a guy for trying to hustle...but c'mon...a pro would have charged
probably 1100 or so to do it...and would have been mucho insured to boot...

anyway..got most of the beast down, and did it without damage to anything...all in all a good day.:greenchainsaw::givebeer:

eh...guess i was just kinda gripin' about getting interrupted when i am already obviously on the job....

I hear yeah man I had a post a while ago talking about the same thing. Me standing in my gear with a rope already in the tree and a bunch of stuff already removed from over a roof. Guys stops and asks if I need a climber to finish the tree.

Might ought keep some "Captain Obvious" trophys around...I never had a guy
stop and ask to mow my yard while I was in the middle of it..what's different?

Y'know, the odd thing was nobody stopped and asked me for the firewood..I figured I'd a had a bunch.

I might get some decent lumber out of a couple of the spars..don't know yet,
the tree was hit by an SUV last year..took one whole face of bark off..'s what started it dying...

I know you were busy climbing Zopi but we need pictures. Should have told the dude you dont need a tree cutter but a photographer! Seriously there are people like that around. I guess they figure it cant hurt asking.

Ok..here's the spar I left standing..I'll knock it down next week sometime..and yes I realize there are some big tearouts up top..I needed alot of hinge to keep them close to the tree...except the one on this side..the branch in the foreground was hanging over the house and I was a little leery of climbing the bloody thing as it was pretty rotten...cut a fat "uphill hinge" on it and
pulled toward the street with the truck..not orthodox maybe, but safer for all concerned..me particularly..:greenchainsaw:

The big spar on this side has some nice boards in it I think.

The missing bark on the right side of the trunk is where moron in SUV hit it...
idiots.

The crotch where the climbing line is, was the highest safe TIP I could get..I could have got anothe 5' or so with a false crotch..but hey...

File a property damage claim with the SUV insurance?

Would've filed some personal damage on the drunk sob if I had been home...neighbors didn't even think to get the license number...:censored:

I get that a lot. I try to ignore them the best I can. I don't mind somebody coming up looking for work or pointing out a potential problem in a tactful way, but when they start saying "what I'd do" or "man I'd already have that down" I just want to follow them to their work and critique or try to belittle them in front of their boss. Problem is most of them don't have a job. Last month I was doing some tree work for another tree climber when the customers neighbor comes out and starts telling me I need to "climb higher, climb higher, then you can just walk out on the limb". I was only dropping one limb off this tree and there was absolutely no reason to walk out on it, heck I could almost reach it with my pole saw. Then this fat chain smoking slob started hanging out with us all day, holding up the groundsman while I was trying to rope out some limbs from another tree, telling the groundsman all about his climbing days, meanwhile trying to tell me what to do next. If I could of just shot him and walked away without any kind of legal repercussion, I think I could of. He honestly held up the job by at least 45 minutes while I was in the second tree. It wasn't my show and the groundsman was the brother to the other climber I was working for so I just bit my lip and didn't say anything.

I'm glad you started this thread, I've been wanting to vent about that guy. Whew, I feel better.

No offense...but judging by the pic you posted, he probably didnt think you knew what heck you were doing. I mean all those shards sticking up dont exactly scream "pro", now do they?

Just a thought, stay safe.

None taken..as I said in the post above, I left that much wood hanging for a reason...without having to rig the chunks down I wanted them falling as straight down as possible...so I was cutting a pretty heavy hinge to get them turning...of course, as with alot of this stuff, you had to be there...

I do so want a GRCS..No real justification for one, but it'd be nice.

Its all good.

How much expierience do you have with treework? Do you intend to do this for a living?

Just curious.

Oh, hell no..I'm not physically strong enough to this day in and day out..I am very slight of frame and 18 years of running around steel decks on ships has taken it's toll on the knees and back...I do a bit of work, mostly in my own interest, firewood or takedowns to keep my sawmill fed...experience wise, I'm no pro..I've never worked under a production type schedule..I drop alot of trees in terms of cutting firewood for the house..but it's not the same as confined work, obviously, I'm pretty selective about what I'll attempt...in fact, this one was pushing my abilities a bit..I would likely have not done it if it were not my own...I didn't have much doubt I could do it safely, it was simply riskier than I ordinarily do...I've been dropping trees for various reasons since I was fairly young..meaning as soon as my old man could put me to work.

I do love climbing though..it;s just more fun with a saw...:chainsaw:

Shouldnt really climb by yourself, and stay safe because accidents happen quick is all I can really add here. Good luck.

yeah..falling is not my big priority...I never climb alone..usually have the wife around to belay when I need it...if not I have a buddy who climbs some..but jacked his back up...

down here $250 is about average on a takedown . how do you know the guy wasnt insured? just curious.

Gut feeling...still appaearances can be deceiving...lets just say he didn't inspire confidence..

Takedowns up here seem to be alot more expensive...particularly difficult ones..
