Gasoline, have you named yours yet?

Ask Rotax Robert for pics also he might even autograph it for you. He's the owner/operator of the Predator.

BTW I was not as impressed with the muffler mod only. JMHO

Mine are all stock but would like A ms460 stage 2 thats my goal for this year. Looking at finding a used one and putting a big bore kit on it. Just sounds like the ultimate power to weight ratio beast. Sometimes the 044 leaves me wanting for power in big wood. I know and yes I want a 660. In due time.

All mine have muffler mods except my Dolmars,7900 and 510.Havent got around to those yet, have gotten good gains especially with my 61 and 346xp

Well I gotta say, there's been alot of sound advice given herein. I'm surprised there's not more, "heck yeah! Get it modded! Screw the price and all the concerns!"

I'll add to the sharp chain and good muffler mod. That's all any of my saws have.

Good thread livewire.

Jeff

Not to sound like a rookie or anything, but what does a muffler mod include? Can I do this myself, or does it mean buying an aftermarket muffler? I am about to acquire my second saw, and I can feel the fever setting already. I love my 026 Pro, ( my 1st saw ). I hope this 034 AV is half as good to my as my 026 is. I love this site.

Muffler mod is just more air flow through, well, your muffler. Beit a second port, and enlarged original port, a factory front cover (044/046/066), or a just a hole or two drilled in it. Try a search first on here for "muffler mod" and then "026 muffler mod." Read up, and you'll have everything you want to know. There's been plenty of talk, and lots of good info.

Yes, you can do it yourself. Yes, you can buy whole mufflers.

Just richen your carb afterword.

I'm kind of riding the fence on muffler mods

200T no
026 yes
260 no
361 no
460 yes DPMC
066 yes DPMC
660 no
041 no, loud enough with stock muffler

And if I do ever have a saw mod done it will be just for fun.

Each of those would benefit from a muffler mod. For the 200T, you can just pull the spark arrestor...provided you don't cut on FS land or in super dry settings. I will advocate muffler mods all day long. There's nothing wrong with better air flow.

That 041 isn't a slave to the EPA. It's probably fine as it is!

If you have a drill and a 5/16 bit, you can mod it. Do a search
I think there is even pics to look at. And if you don't like it
buy a used muffler cover and put it on and your back to a stock
muffler

Thanks, people. I understand the airflow part, but ya know how 2 strokes can be tempermental with that kinda stuff. I will do some research, then go grab my drill. :hmm3grin2orange: Thank you to all of you for the advice, and for a wonderful forum.

I pulled the arrestor out of the 200t, to loud I put it back, when I use this saw at times I will run it 4 to 6 hrs straight, no breaks just to refuel and
no piling limbs just cut and refuel. It dose a good job
I don't think the 361 will be modded either.

I just modded my first muffler last weekend, got the carb retuned and cut yesterday. It is a noticible improvement if your lookin for a little extra cheap. I'm sure my other saws will be getting it shortly.

ran one stock saw, that was in 92'. For a day.
Mod the piss out of em' is my agenda and don't look to close my chains will cut your eyes.:chainsaw:

Good Topic.

The new EPA style mufflers really restrict a saw's performance. Here are two $30-40 projects I did this year: I changed my Stihl 440 to a factory dual port, and my Husky 359 to a non-EPA muffler (Baileys) . A very noticeable improvement in both. These are just easy, low cost, and 5 minute, type of improvements. And if you want to step up a notch in performance, the pro's can do a lot more.

I haven't taken the time to read this whole thread, but here's my two bits. I burned firewood for probably 8-10 years and got along totally fine with a 039 I bought new. Never had a problem with it. Two years ago I moved and no longer have a wood burning stove. I rarely get to cut wood now.

Now look at my sig!! It's all a result of having found this place back around November, mixed with my personality. I'm a "More Power" kind of guy. I do it with everything, from my PCs, vehicles, firearms, digital SLR photography(including weddings). I think many of us probably do have a bit of OCD, really. That's not all bad though. I bought a one month old 361 about 2 weeks ago. I honestly have not even had it in wood yet and Big Dave is doing a woods port job on it as we speak. It totally boils down to what you want. You don't need it, based on you original post. The 361 is more than adequate. I have rebuilt several saws recently. Every one of them has been muffler modded. This 361 is going to be my long term keeper though and I just wanted to have that kind of power in a lighter saw than a stock 440 or 460.

That being said, computeruser is right, youd crap yourself seeing firsthand the improvements that can be had taking the time to keep your chains straight. Id say take the money youd use to mod it and buy yourself a grinder...

Exactly! I've thought about doing a muffler mod to my 250 when the warranty expires next month, but I doubt that I will. With a good sharp RS chain, it'll eat thru the wood plenty fast enough as it is. My chain grinder is one of the best investments I ever made, and I have two chains for each of my saws so that if I notice it getting dull on me, I can quickly change over to a freshly sharpened one. Or I just grab another saw with a sharp chain and keep on cuttin'! :biggrinbounce2:

Good question.

I wonder where Talon has been lately. Not that I miss him, of course, just wondering is all.

I'm sure he will be back, Even he went ahead and had his muffler modded on his MS361 AKA (Big Brutus)
I don't know why that would be gay unless you mean ( Being happy)
Lots of people call there saws "The King" around here.
