I have the economy version, a rubber mallet.
I have 2, and a wooden one, too.:) Do you use a stethoscope with yours? I get much better auditory data thru my chainsaw-fried ears by listening thru one.

I've used resistographs and sibtecs (which digitize the readings) before, not a sonic tomograph yet. Doubt I'll ever buy any of those gizmoes, because cavity size is just one factor in risk assessment. Lean, exposure, vigor as measured by callus growth, target, ease of mitigation by soilbuilding, cables, pruning etc. all play into the decision about risk.

Technology is great, but is abused when other signs and factors are ignored. Hollow trees can stand strong; the formulas are guesses and not for chiseling a tree's fate into stone.

the less interventious method to assess and possibly map decay spread over time?
Sure, it does that, and if you do a lot of that kind of work, then it may be worth the money.

Speed of cavity spread, whether by decay or Formosan termites etc., may be very useful information.

i had a demo of a PICUS from FUJIKURA EUROPE ..yes its a good peice of equipment though you need to know a bit about computers to get the best out of it.unfortunately i dont..also i've been told it cannot detect or show up brown rots..and i've heard this from several differant consultants overhere the PICUS retails at £10000..plus you need a lap top...but i've been told its a real money maker .fujikura told me that most of the PICUS sales so far have been to south east asia mainly too hong kong and singapore
