I have been working in the Sierras the past 2 weeks mostly falling hazard trees and at night managing burn piles. The ranger asked me if I would cut some large logs from last year into benches. They saw one I cut last year in my off time and liked it a little to much. The logs were 3 1/2' in diameter and 9 to 12' long. One was up tight under a small cedar and against a rock wall. Hard to get to. I've made enough of these to know what to do but was getting tired and not concentrating. Stupid on my part. I was using a MS441 with a 25" bar and cutting 10 degrees down for the back rest. About 4" into the cut I raised the nose a bit and the saw kicked straight back into my thigh. I didn't know I could whimmper like that. The handle hit my right front pocket... fortunately or I would be typing in a higher key. My jeans abraded the skin pretty good and I was surprised how much I bled. Of course I have a nice blue bruise.
I was working by myself so no one saw me limping around for 10 minutes. There were 6 guys right there 5 minutes before the kickback. I would have been using the 660 but there was no room under the tree. I was using the 090 with a 5' bar an hour earlier.
Now I have to go back and make 3 more benches. Hopefully this time I will be more aware.
