Can someone please tell me why the major manufacturers make "top handle" chainsaws if not for one-handed operation? Or is one-hand operation truly the overriding purpose of the design? Local retailers here tell me the top handles are meant for one-handed operation. But the safety manuals for these saws say they must only be operated with two hands. It seems to me the design invites/encourages/facilitates one-handed operation, and the saws are marketed for this purpose, and the safety instruction calling for two-handed operation is just a cover. While everyone on this site might agree that two handed operation is safest, I would really like to know if you think these saws are designed/marketed with one handed operation in mind.

If you had ever worked in the tight confines of a tree you would see right away the purpose behind top handle saws! Alot of the time you don't have room between branches to manuver a rear handle saw, so enter the top handle .And NO they are NOT ment to be used one handed but people do use them that way.;)

Amen to the 200T;)

In the US 2 hands is a must. I think the UK allows one hand use but only when no other option is available:confused:

I am guilty of it at times but conscious of it when I am doing so and therefore take extra care.

I used to be a one handing chainsaw freak until I figured that saftey and tree care is a numbers game and my actions were stacking the deck against me.

If your work plan involves a lot of one handing, maybe you need a new work plan.

IMO, the people who are shopping around to put a 200T or a 3400 in their head/chest are those that use the saw one handed to buck up tree parts on the ground.

When I am in a bucket about one in 25 cuts is one handed. So yes once in a while, but I am not in the bucket often either;)
