Having nothing to do with palms before being from Denver, do they really top palms? Or is this another sonny joke? If so why do they? Is this a correct practice? I will send an email to you in a minute criticizing your spelling.:D

Sonny,

How do you top a palm without killing it? And who would put out a contract like that? Line clearance? Do you mean they just cut all the fronds off and then let them grow back again? Please clarify. I'm confused.

Brett.. You being in Florida and all I thought you would know that Palms are monocots. That being said you can cut them pretty much all the way to the ground and they will grow back.

You can remove the growing tip of a palm and it will still grow? I've seen them killed by growing tip getting bruised, diseased or cut; i think.

Some, Palmettos patches that stay low; we have seen come back after the patch was ground, same with bananna patches. But, i really don't know about topping regular Palm Trees..............

Treeman82...You being ejukated in skool and all, I thought you would know that if you cut the terminal bud in a palm, it will die.

i could be wrong but do are palms not monocots and as such grow from the base as grass on a lawn does. trouble is the green bit is at the top not the base so i guess we'll have to do some reading or sonny can tell us.

Im sorry gentlemen & ladys. but I have no idea what a monocot is.I dont know if Fl. palms are diffrent. I believe the Cal. palms taste much better than them cabbage palms. But I have never seen a palm grow once the heart was cut out.

a monocotyledon is a group of plants as oppose to dicotyledon. each pertains to the number of leaves initials stored in the seed before germination (I think!someone correct me if i'm wrong). The reason you or anyone can mow a lawn is because the grass grows from the base. In dicots ie 'usual' trees and plants, the active cell division is at the apex- the apical meristem. due to hormones as everyone here knows, they can be cut out but a lateral assumes dominance. I know sod all about palms being from scotland. Until my learned associates on this web site had taught me a thing or two. Still don't suppose it would help palms grow in scotland, climate would be nice.

I don't know, I had some swamp cabbage , made from cabbage palms while I was in Fl. + it was pretty good. Had a tomato sauce w/sausage to kick it up, BAM!

I live in FL and have never heard of eating anything but the heart of palm, and the fruit. I've also never seen a palm with a dead or missing top ever come back from the dead.
I like to look at palms, but hate to work on them.
Greg

It was made with the hearts of cabbage palms, these guys had about a 4 gallon pot of it brewing for xmas where my dad buys his suppiles. Good stuff.
Do people actually eat boiled peanuts more than once? I thought it was just a joke they play on the northerners that drive down there, kinda like those endless South of The Border signs a cruel joke.

I LOVE boiled peanuts!!! One of those reginal foods that you can't understand (living in that region) why everyone in the world doesn't like them. No joking!! Grits too! Cheese grits kick ass!

Heart of palm is a big item in salads down here, I really don't care for it.

I'll eat a peanut for ya!
Greg

Boiled Peanuts is something you have to try; and as anything else, get ones made right; not too mushy!

They have even come out with Cajun spiced ones in the last few years. You go into 'quicky marts' and they have them steeping in crock pots!

Hearts of palm is a good pickled, or cooked food too!

when i was at MCAS BEAUFORT in SC we had them all the time now when ever somone is down there i make them bring me some.
