That's one experience I have not yet had. The tying-in-twice habit has worked to avoid that. Do you recommend it before or after that full gainer into the pond?
 
Propping up the root plate will reduce the likelihood of the whole works flopping back into the hole. Cut off some stout limbs and brace the 'y' against some beefy roots. You could also lay in some beams between two 'y' branches to cradle the plate.
